Censar Technologies Case Study Censar Multiparameter Water Quality Monitoring System Monitoring of Drinking Water Quality in the Distribution Network Challenge To ensure that water quality reaching the consumers is of the highest quality and free of microorganisms, all water companies add a disinfectant to the water at the treatment works. The level of disinfectant leaving the works is routinely measured by on line analysers. However, as the water enters the distribution network there is an increased risk of disinfection residual decay. Ensuring consistent water quality is delivered to the customer’s tap requires the constant manual sampling and analysis of the water at various points in the network. Whilst a high consistency of compliance is achieved by the water companies to the standards identified by the regulator, achieving that compliance is an expensive and time consuming activity. There are also many factors that can affect the decay pattern, including the condition of the pipe, demand characteristics etc, all of which are difficult to determine from manual sampling alone. Performing on line measurements of water quality in the water distribution network has been the long term goal of the engineers responsible for this activity. However, whilst there are analysers available for this application in the treatment works, deploying this type of instrumentation in the network has been impossible. Solution The challenge to measure Free Available Chlorine and other chlorine species, reagent free and under constant mains pressure has now been solved by Censar Technologies. The introduction of the Censar chip and probe has revolutionised water quality measurements. Installing the system into the network is easy; the probe can be inserted directly into a pipe under pressure via a gate or saddle valve. Censar Multiparameter Chip Installation of the analysers at strategic points in the system provides data for a control regime for secondary dosing rather than the conventional practice of chlorine dosing on manual spot sampling and statistical modelling. Analysers can also be installed in areas where network problems are known to increase chlorine demand. Data from installed devices in the network can now also be monitored remotely using SMS messaging.
