Consumers have spoken and they’re asking for affordable, environmentally-friendly household cleaners that are as effective as traditional cleaning products. Retailers have recognized that consumers will use green-ness as a criterion when making their purchasing decisions. However, trends have shown that consumers are not willing to pay a premium for eco-friendly products unless they compare favorably to tried and true formulations and brands. However, the trend toward green isn’t driven by the consumer market alone. There’s more to the story than satisfying the demands of the eco-conscious. This year’s updated program will focus on the regulatory environment that is changing the way people perceive “clean.”Conference highlightsBy defining the ways in which regulations, voluntary programs and technological developments are “greening” the household care industry, What’s New on the ‘Clean Green’ Scene: Cleaning Products 2008, will address the latest issues and answer your questions about the dynamic changes that are transforming the way consumers clean houseLast November’s conference drew over 140 leading executives from a range of departments within companies all across the cleaning products supply chain. Together, they learned from our panel of experts, as well as from one another, about the dynamic regulatory environment affecting the consumer products industry. The agenda proved to be the most notable forum in 2007 for discussion and networking on this crucial topic. This year’s new and updated event is a can’t-miss opportunity to meet the industry power players and get the information you need to keep pace with the progress being made in the green cleaning revolutionWho should attend?Suppliers of chemicals, additives and ingredients to the cleaning product industry will discover new marketing opportunities, learn how to assess future growth potential and get updated on the latest technical innovations and breakthroughs in environmentally-friendly formulations.Consumer products companies researching and developing new products for more environmentally responsible consumers will benefit from this event by learning where consumer and retailer trends are heading and what technology is available to meet them.Legislators, law firms and lobbyists to the cleaning products industry will also benefit from the opportunity this independent forum provides to assess industry issues from every angle.Your conference ChairBrian SansoniVice President Communication and MembershipTHE SOAP AND DETERGENT ASSOCIATIONg Understand the latest retailer and consumer trends driving the cleaning products marketg Hear case studies on the Environmental Protection Agency’s DfE programg Learn about the latest developments in green chemistry and the impacts on formulationsg Assess how the latest scientific and technical breakthroughs are enabling the manufacture of cold water and low water use of cleaning productsg Get updated on the regulations affecting the cleaning products industry by the EPA and the FTCg Gain expert insight into strategies of up-and-coming players like Method and Seventh Generationg Get a market overview and forecast from leading industry analystsg Discover what “environmentally responsible” means for all stakeholders, including NGOs, regulators and the cleaning products supply chain from raw materials suppliers to retailersg Examine how industrial biotechnology is changing product formulationsg Meet and network with the leading representatives from across the industrywhat’s on the agendaJoin conference Chair, Brian Sansoni, Vice President of Communication and Membership of the Soap and Detergent Association, during two full days of presentations, discussions and networking opportunities. To meet these requirements in the household and personal care sectors, it has become necessary to explore new and/or modified greener efficient surface-active agents. One way to achieve this goal in formulations is by mixing surfactants with synergy. In this talk, principles of achieving such synergy without sacrificing efficiency will be examined. The interfacial and colloidal properties of these reagents will receive particular attention since they play the critical role in determining their performance in many industrial applications, such as detergency and waste management.Your seminar instructor:Professor P Somasundaran is the La von Duddleson Krumb Professor and Director of the IUCRC Center for Advanced Studies in Novel Surfactants and the Langmuir Center for Colloids and Interfaces at Columbia University. Professor Somasundaran’s research interests are in surface and colloid chemistry, green surface active agents, nanotechnology, enhanced oil recovery, dispersion, waste treatment, molecular interactions at surfaces using advanced spectroscopy, polymer surfactant, protein adsorption and biosurface phenomena. Part 2: An introduction to sustainable packagingThe first portion of this seminar will give an overview of key sustainability concepts and drivers, and how they affect packaging. It will then provide in-depth information on regulations and business trends affecting packaging design. Drawing on case studies and best practices, an explanation of how to put these concepts into practice to ensure that your packaging is compliant with applicable regulations will be featured.Participants will learn about strategies for evaluating different package designs and how they will be evaluated in scoring systems such as those being implemented by Wal-Mart and other major retailers. For producers of cleaning products, complying with these requirements may reveal cost reduction opportunities. The agenda will also cover strategies for communicating environmental packaging and product attributes to today’s environmentally-conscious consumer in ways that add credibility to your brand. Your seminar instructor:Victor Bell is President of Environmental Packaging International (EPI), a consultancy specializing in global environmental packaging and product stewardship requirements. Mr Bell, who founded EPI in 1998, is a Certified Packaging Professional with more than 20 years of experience with environmental issues associated with packaging and products. EPI has provided assistance to major companies worldwide in the electronics, toy, soft drink, cosmetics, medical and general merchandise industries. Mr Bell is on the Executive Committee of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.INDUSTRY OVERVIEWEND USER PERSPECTIVEREGULATORY INSIGHTSMonday, November 17 – Wednesday, November 19, 2008Hilton Old Town
