Coke Oven Plants: Zero-Discharge Bio-Mechanical Waste Water Treatment

The waste water of a coke plant, mainly consisting of water from coal moisture and discharge water from other process units needs to be treated in such way, that it can be re-used in the coke plant or steel works.

Before the waste water enters the waste water treatment plant, it will be collected in feed tanks in order to equalize improper concentrations of constituents due to fluctuation of operation. The waste water will be cleaned in five stages, where the first two stages are biological stages followed by pure mechanical ones.

Using this concept of a bio-mechanical waste water treatment, residual water of different qualities is being produced, which can be re-used for several purposes. There is no further waste water remaining which must be discharged somewhere.

This concept has been developped by Thyssen-Krupp and WEHRLE together. It tackles with toxic phenols, cyanides, furans etc.
