Water Well Screen & Casing SystemsProven quality worldwideMaking The Best Of What Nature Provides2 3Waterwell Casing and Screens:A sustainable supply of good quality clean water is a priceless asset, of which 97% of the worlds total volume lies beneath the Earths surface as groundwater.Groundwater availability, flow, storage, chemistry and microbiology is not uniform or constant in water bearing stratas. These characteristics vary in three dimensions, and change with the fourth dimension of time. The challenge for Hydrogeologists, Drillers and Engineers is to make the best of what Nature provides. In many environments it is essential to seal off shallow groundwater sources which can easily be contaminated by man’s activities on the surface which precipitates the need to draw from deeper groundwater flows that are better protected. Plain PVC Well Casing, with an appropriate grout seal in the annulus, is necessary to exclude the shallow groundwater, protect the pump and support the unstable upper layers of overburden and rock. Deeper down, the selected groundwater flow system may be through unstable sands and gravels, or highly fractured and weathered bedrock aquifers. In both cases it is important to stablise the aquifer strata, and, at the same time, allow the groundwater to flow easily into the borehole. A PVC Well Screen is installed to achieve this purpose. The Well Screen should be strong enough, with a suitable gravel pack, to prevent the collapse of the producing section of the borehole, and yet be designed with a sufficient slot size and open area to permit the efficient flow of water from the aquifer into the borehole.Boode bv have over 100 years of experience in both drilling, and the supply of a wide range of high quality products to the water well drilling industry, together with advice that enable professionals in the industry to make the best of what Nature can provide.“We will never know the worth of water until the well goes dry” – Dr Thomas Fuller c.1732Boode PVC Well Screen & Casing are approved by the UK Secretary of State under regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000” [previously Regulation 25 of the 1989 Regulations] & are listed in the “List of Approved Products and Processes for use in Public Water Supply” published by the DWI www.dwi.gov.ukContents PageCompany Profile 5Well Design 6Pumping Data For PVC Screen 7Standard PVC Casing & Vertical Slot Screen 1”- 6” (26 mm – 165 mm) 8Standard PVC Casing & Vertical Slot Screen 6½”- 24” (180 mm – 630 mm) 10Boode CSS™ - Continuous Slot PVC Screen 12Boode BGP™ - Gravel Coated PVC Screen 13BoodePac™ - Dual Wall PVC Screen 14HDPE Screen & Casing 15Ancillary Equipment 16Boode - Official Agents for Johnson Screens 18Boode – Official Retailer for Baroid IDP 19Bentonite & Well Sealing Products 20Dorsilit Filter Media 21Borehole Monitoring Equipment 22Boresaver - Well Rehabilitation Treatment 23The Fairwater BluePump 24Applications 25Geothermal Systems & Environmental Information 26Environmental Responsibility 274 5Company ProfileBOODE BV is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of equipment for the water well drilling industry.Improved Drilling PerformanceBOODE Work to stringent parameters and high specification standards using advanced materials and manufacturing equipment. There has been much research and field experimentation in the last 80 years to try to work out the optimum flow rate through the slots in a screen, for different grain size and permeability aquifers, to minimise friction head losses, corrosion, erosion by fine sand or silt, or encrustation.Various authorities have presented safe, optimum or recommended entrance velocities. These range from a generally accepted optimum of 3cm/second to an upper limit of 45cm/second. It is not possible to be more precise because every borehole and aquifer is different. All authorities stress the value of local knowledge amongst drillers, hydrogeologists and engineers. Experience of what works best locally is usually more successful than theoretical calculations. The well screen slots in contact with the natural or artificial gravel pack are always partially blocked by the granular material in the gravel pack. Therefore the entrance velocity, or the amount of water that can get through the screen slot is not determined solely by the aperture of the slot.Instead, it is controlled by the apertures between the grains of sand or gravel jammed up against, or partially, into the slot. Biofilms or encrustation can build up over time and further reduce the size of open holes either in the gravel pack or the screen. These factors cannot be controlled or predicted accurately. Therefore the table below is a simple conservative guide to the amount of water that can obtained for a length of one metre length of 1 mm slot screen and a two metre drawdown. These flow rates can be exceeded, if a clean gravel pack can be developed with large well rounded grains around a screen with wider slots.Listed below is approximate data relating to the volume of water that can be pumped through a 1 metre length of screen with 1 mm slots (with a 2 metre drop in the water level), all based on practical experience and results.Pumping Data For PVC ScreenWell DesignLOW PErMEABILITy OVErBUrDENSAND AND GrAVEL AqUIFEr1234567891110Legend 1. BGP screens have a gravel coat of 10 mm to 23 mm thickness giving a relatively small outside diameter whilst still retaining the advantage of a gravel pack. The gravel coating is of well rounded correctly sieved and clean quartz gravel (99.1% SiO2). A highly rated waterproof bonding material is used to adhere the gravel to the screen, with the proportion of adhesive to gravel being very low, ensuring that the individual gravel grains are joined at their smallest contact points. There is virtually no permeability loss compared with normal gravel packing as the adhesive at the contact points of gravel grains takes the place of normal capillary retention.Advantages of BOODE BGP Screens:• Gravel coat uniform and same thickness over full length of screen, ensuring 100% coverage.• BOODE BGP is totally non-corrodable.• Highly recommended for rehabilitating existing damaged and corroded wells.• Smaller diameter borehole required.• Prevents borehole collapse.• Collapse resistance increased Screen Outside Gravel Length Approx. outside diam over thickness weight diam* gravel d1 d2 s1 mm/inch mm mm m kg/m 33 (1") 54 10.5 1 2.5 42 (11/4") 65 12 1 3.5 48 (11/2") 73 12.5 1 4.0 50 (11/2") 73 11.5 1 3.5 60 (2") 91 15.5 1 6 90 (3") 120 15 1 8 110 (31/2") 144 15.5 1 10.5 113 (4") 144 14 1 11.5 125 (41/2") 156 15.5 1 - 2 13.5 160 (51/2") 190 15 1 - 2 - 2.5 16 165 (6") 191 12.5 1 - 2 - 2.5 15 200 (7") 232 16 1 - 2 17.5 225 (8") 256 15.5 1 - 2 24.5 250 (9") 283 16.5 1 - 2 - 2.5 29.5 280 (10") 311 15.5 1 - 2 35 315 (11") 361 23 1 - 2 50 330 (12") 361 15.5 1 - 2 44* for diameters and wall thicknesses please refer to page nos. 8-11 WallThickness mmInsidediam mmWeight per m kgType ofconnectionDiameter overconnectionTensilestrength kgPossibleslotwidth mm2.534.566.57.57445872104116139172 0.82 1.39 2.10 3.54 4.69 7 7.56ACCCCCC6175901251401652006501250145026003100490062000.3-30.3-30.3-30.4-30.4-30.5-30.6-3* With external ribs. Filter pack should be sand or gravel that is clean, well-rounded & uniform. It is placed in the annulus of the well between the borehole wall and the well screen to prevent formation material from entering the screen. It is critical to select a screen with the corres-ponding filter pack in relation to well strata analysis Dorsilit crystal silica sand (99.1% SiO2) is washed several times and therefore free from mire, humic substances and other contamination. After drying, the material is graded accurately packed, ensuring easy placing every time.Desirable filter pack characteristics and derived advantages are:Characteristic AdvantageClean Little loss of material during development. Less development time.Well rounded grains Higher hydraulic conductivity and porosity. reduced drawdown. Higher yield. More effective development.Uniformity Less seperation during installation. Lower head loss through filter pack.Selection chart Soil analysis Filter gravel Slotwidth 21In the Mikolit product range Mikolit 300 is the most widely used and is suitable for most applications.Once the spaces between the grains are full, a wide degree of swelling capacity remains, which means that, in case of breakdown, the clay layer will repair itself. As the introduced clay layer is not saturated with water it is therefore a fixed clay layer, Mikolit 300 has excellent sinking qualities due to the product being dust free and incorporates a retardant which slows down the swelling process. Mikolit 300, due to its composition, is recommended for use with temporary casing as it is designed to have virtually no adhesion to the well casing. For sealing, it is recommended to add a coarse sand layer between the gravel and the Mikolit 300 seal. Mikolit 300 can be used in saline water.Quantity needed (kg/m) Bore-hole (mm)Tube/Casing (mm) 300 100 125 150 200 250 300 400 500 600 0 9 13 19 34 54 77 137 215 309 50 6 11 17 32 51 75 135 212 307 100 5 11 26 45 69 129 206 300 125 6 21 40 64 124 201 295 160 12 32 55 115 193 287 200 19 43 103 180 175 250 24 84 161 255 315 52 129 224 400 77 172 500 94Cebogel Bentonite products also available22 23Borehole Monitoring EquipmentWater Level Indicators: Boresaver, as supplied by BOODE, is an approved range of specialist treatments for water supply systems contaminated with iron bacteria, iron oxide, manganese oxide and calcium carbonate deposits. The treatments completely remove the deposits that build up and cause blockages in wells, pipes, pumps and any other water related equipment. That is the reason why the FairWater Foundation has developed a new and innovative hand pump in cooperation with organisations like Oxfam. This pump is extremely robust and durable and will continue to work properly in deep wells. The service for installation and maintenances is provided by a local network of service organisations. The BluePump is not the cheapest hand pump to purchase, but it offers the durability that is most important for the user and that is what it is all about. Besides being more durable, the BluePump is easier to use by women and children and supplies more water than comparable pumps. The design of the BluePump is surprisingly simple. All parts are made of high quality and durable materials. The core of the BluePump is a stainless steel pump part with a double foot valve which will continue to function without problems, even under the pressure of a 100 m water column. The whole is free of maintenance. Under normal circumstances the BluePump requires no spare parts for 10 to 15 years. The BluePump is therefore becoming increasingly more popular in many African countries. The BluePump is supplied by BOODE Inc. or through any of the many regional BluePump dealers in Africa which can also provide the installing and the associated service.THE BLUEPUMP IS THE MOST DURABLE HAND PUMP FOR AFRICA AND IS AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE THROUGH BOODE Inc.A hand pump is a relatively cheap way to pump water from a well. That is why over 350,000 hand pumps have been constructed in Africa. However, it turns out that the maintenance of a simple hand pump in Africa gives a lot of problems. Because of this more than 50% of the constructed hand pumps are no longer in use. Especially in areas where the ground water level is very deep there are problems with maintenance and pumps also break regularly.BluePumps distributors in:The Netherlands, UK, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Congo, DRC, Central African Republic, Cote d’Ivoir, Ethiopia, Niger, Malawi, Mozambique, The Gambia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Swaziland.Suitable up to 100 mt. depthThe FairWater BluePump®The FairWater BluePump®26 27Geothermal SystemsUnderground Thermal Energy StorageType: open systemsBOODE bv is a market leader in the supply of KIWA, DWi and WrAS approved PVC well casing and screen systems in relation to the installation of Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES), also referred to as Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES). UTES and ATES systems commenced in The Netherlands in the early 1980’s, and, since then, new completed systems number in the many hundreds. These renewable systems provide heating in winter and cooling in summer to buildings, through heat exchangers, via the extraction of groundwater from boreholes drilled into natural underground layers where the heat and cold are stored. The installed systems vary in depth from 30mts to 200mts+ in suitable geological formations, and can contribute to savings of up to 75% on current heating & cooling bills Advantages: • renewable energy source• Carbon emissions reduced by up to 60%• Low risk proven technology• Cost effective• Payback achievable in less than 5 yearsEnvironmental ResponsibilityPVC is a low carbon material, much lower than many alternatives and displaysastonishing longevity, even in the harshest environments. PVC has numerous benefits and offers a reliable and low impact solution to water abstraction and movement.Carbon impact of PVCOne measure of a material’s environmental impact is its carbon footprint. Carbon footprinting is a complex exercise and takes into account the embedded carbon impact of the materials (the impact of producing the raw material in the first place), the carbon impact of processing the materials, and the impact of disposal/recycling. This is expressed in Kgs or tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e)..Transport impactBoode’s well screen & casing materials are manufactured in Holland (transported by road and sea for the UK market). Consequently, the environmental impact associated with transport for product supplied from Holland is significantly lower than material sourced from the Far East or Indian Sub-Continent. The table below shows Kg CO2e per tonne delivered from a range of locations (Shanghai, Mumbai, and Rotterdam).Material Carbon impact per Kg (material & processing)Boode PVC 2.816 Stainless steel (304L) 5.341Kg/tonneCO2 China CO2 India CO2 Holland (for UK) CO2 Holland (Ex-Works)325.02 198.81 23.02 0.00Longevity of PVCOne of the key attributes of PVC is its longevity, and more importantly its ability to provide longevity across a massively wide range of differing environments.Key to this is PVC’s resistance to oxidising substances. The same is not true of other well materials. Consequently, the life-cycle of PVC in the field is in the region of 100 years minimum. If alternative materials are used in areas with high levels of corrosivity they may only have an operation life of a couple of years.Production wasteBoode recover and recycle a minimum of 95% of all production waste from their production in a closed loop recycling process.3 Steps to a sustainable future:- Reduce your water footprint Utilise Renewables Reduce your carbon footprintHeat demandAqUIFERAqUIFERCold demandAll Boode PVC products can be recycled and we are proud to support the Recovinyl scheme.Find your nearest certified Recovinyl recycler at www.recovinyl.comBOODE b.v.Nijverheidscentrum 3NL 2761 JP ZevenhuizenThe NetherlandsT. +31 180 63 27 44F. +31 180 63 30 90E. info@boode.comBoode UK Ltd.Brindley road, Dodwells Bridge,Hinckley, Leics.
