P.O. Box l00, Tualatin,Oregon, or approved equal. Skimmers and operator(s) shallbe furnished complete with all necessary parts andaccessories; and shall be fabricated, assembled and placed inproper operating condition in accordance with installationinstructions and recommendations of the equipmentmanufacturer. Equipment shall be the latest product design ofa manufacturer regularly engaged in the production ofequipment of this type.Manufacturers other than the above named company wishingto quote on equipment in this section shall submit detaileddrawings of their proposed equipment, and suitable evidenceof experience and results to the engineer and obtain hiswritten approval to quote at least l0 days prior to bid opening.2.0 DESIGN CRITERIA2.1 Design: Scum skimmer assemblies will be designed so that the maximum fiber stress, (ultimate or yield, which ever applies),does not exceed 2.5 times the working stress. Skimmer shall be suitably reinforced to withstand a deflection at the maximumoperating head of less than l/360, or l/4 inch whichever is less. The scum skimmer shall be designed to support, within stressand deflection limitations, the following loadings:2.1.1. Downward vertical loads or gravity loads shall include the weight of the product and appurtenant attachments, togetherwith the weight of water to fill the product. Any additional loads, such as piping, and so forth, shall also be considered.2.1.2. The buoyant load shall act vertically upward, its magnitude equal to the weight of displaced water (product weightneglected). The line of action passes through the centroid of thesubmerged cross-sectional area.2.2 Workmanship: Composition of the scum trough laminate shall bein accordance with the recommendations shown in the QualityAssurance Report for Reinforced Thermoset Plastic (RTP) CorrosionResistant Equipment prepared under the sponsorship of the Society ofthe Plastics Industry Inc. Typical sizes range from 6 ft. to 20 ft. in length, and will be 6 inch to 18 inch indiameter. Most are manually operated with a leverarm. A handwheel or electric operator is also an available option. Please consult factory for information.FRP Rotating Scum Skimmers provide exceptional corrosionresistance under some of the worst operating conditionstypically found in plant headworks and industrial processclarifiers. The laminate comprising the structureshall consist of a molded inner surface, a structural layer, and an exterior or outer surface, and shall be manufactured ofreinforced thermoset plastic containing ultraviolet absorbers. The surface shall be resin rich to a depth of 0.0l0 to 0.020 inchesand reinforced with C-glass or polymeric fibersurfacing material. The surface shall be free ofexposed reinforcing fibers. The composition ofthese layers shall be approximately 95% (byweight) resin. The remaining laminate shall bemade up of copolymer composite and reinforcingfibers in a form, orientation and position to meetthe mechanical requirements. 4.2 Metallic Structural Elements: Metalreinforcing members, where required, shall be freeof rust, oil, and any foreign matter. They shall becompletely encapsulated with a minimum of 1/8-in.(3-mm) thick laminate to ensure against pinholebleeding and subsequent rust streaking. Additionalprotection of the metal reinforcement (galvanizingor the application of rust inhibitive primer) does notpreclude the need to completely encapsulate thereinforcing member.4.3 Laminate cuts, slots, and holes: When necessary to cut the laminate structures, drill holes, machine slots, and so forth,all cut edges shall be sanded smooth and sealed with resin solution, paraffinated to prevent air inhibition to ensure the completesealing of edges to prevent water from penetrating or wicking into the laminate.4.4 Deflection Under Load.4.4.1 Maximum vertical deflection under full buoyant or gravity load shall be equal to or less than L/360, where L is defined asthe unsupported product length, in inches. The maximum vertical deflection, measured at the midpoint between productsupports, shall not exceed 1/4 in.4.4.2 Thermal expansion/contraction.
