Crystex - 60 OT 10 - Polymeric Sulfur and Rhombic Sulfur Brochure
Product Data SheetCrystex™ 60 OT 10CAS No. Polymeric sulfur: 9035-99-8Rhombic sulfur: 7704-34-9Process oil: VariousProduct DescriptionChemical name: Mixture of polymeric sulfur and rhombic sulfurCrystex™ 60 OT 10 is a non-blooming vulcanizing agent for unsaturated elastomers.MAJOR APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES:Crystex™ 60 OT 10 is a mixture of polymeric sulfur and rhombic sulfur with limitedsolubility in elastomers. Consequently it will retard bin scorch, prevent migration ofsulfur and preserve surface tack. This is important in the manufacture of tires and otherplied-up rubber goods. At vulcanization temperatures Crystex™ 60 OT 10 will de-polymerize to soluble sulfurand will behave similar to "Rubber Maker's" sulfur.Crystex™ 60 OT 10 is a metastable product which can revert to soluble sulfur if notstored under proper conditions.Reversion of Crystex™ 60 OT 10 to soluble sulfur is also catalyzed by alkaline products. The presence of alkaline accelerators can be critical.Crystex™ 60 OT 10 is used in compounds containing a relatively large sulfur loadingabove the solubility of sulfur in the elastomer.Crystex™ 60 OT 10 is non-staining and non-discoloring.Compounding InformationBecause insoluble sulfur is metastable temperatures should be kept as low as possible duringmixing. Between 100°C and 130° C significant reversion can take place to soluble sulfur.Dispersion of Crystex™ 60 OT 10 in rubber is critical. Due to its small particle size and itstendency for electrostatic charge build-up, agglomerates can be formed which can result ininhomogeneous vulcanizates. Sufficiently long mixing times should be applied preferably in aseparate mixing step under well controlled conditions. If dry pre-mixes are produced of Crystex™ 60 OT 10 and other vulcanization chemicals, reversion can take place if Crystex™ 60 OT 10 is in direct contact with alkaline components.Because Crystex™ 60 OT 10 contains a relatively high soluble sulfur content, applicationsshould be limited to compounds with a relatively low level of sulfur and/or low compoundingtemperature.Typical Properties Property Typical Value, Units Property Typical Value, UnitsForm Insoluble/ground sulfur mix(60/40), 10% oil treatedpowder Specific Gravity @ 20°C 1.78 Bulk Density Unpacked 250-450 kg/m3 Packed 500-800 kg/m3Mean particle size <30 µmStorageStore Crystex™ in a well ventilated area below 30°C, avoiding exposure of the packagedproduct to direct sunlight. Do not store near products that can emit free amines such assulfenamides and DTDM. Amines and other alkaline vapors can cause Crystex™ to revert to"Rubber Maker's" sulfur at any temperature. High temperatures will also cause Crystex™ torevert to "Rubber Maker's" sulfur. When stored in closed containers below 20°C the reversionrate is less than 1%/year. Reversion of Crystex™ could result in sulfur bloom of uncuredrubber.Handling PrecautionsFor detailed information on toxicological properties and handling precautions please refer tothe current Safety Data Sheet.
