However, many businesses are unaware that under the Environmental LiabilitiesDirective (ELD) they are responsible for the cost of any pollution incidents and conse-quential losses that arise. What is also less known that insurance companies these daysexpect companies to be aware of the risks posed by drain and sewer blockages and theneed to employ a regular drain cleaning and inspection programme. As blockages can build relatively quickly, especially in industries that produce high levelsof FOG, regular monitoring can mean the daily lifting of drain covers. The lifting of coverscan be inconvenient and costly, especially if they are below highways where HighwaysAgency or Local Authority permits need to be acquired. Each BDT decoder card is provided with three statusLEDs and individual latching relays for direct con-nection to the existing telemetry or SCADA. One relay and LED is provided for high level, one fornormal and one for communications status. Contactscan be wired individually or paralleled if outstationcapacity is limited.Reading BDTsBDT’s emit a unique coded radio message that canbe read using one of our hand held / vehicle re-ceivers or over a fixed wireless network. The hand held receiver reads the status of a BDT onaverage in just 2 seconds. It automatically decodesand displays the BDTs electronic serial number fol-lowed by its status i.e. “blocked” (level high) or “OK”.There is also a version of the BDT that includes asimple data logger that will inform the driver of thepassing vehicle about both the current state andwhether the BDT has detected a high level at anytime in the past week. This variant is useful as it isable to give extended warning of growing restrictionswithin the network that may only manifest for shortperiods of peak flow or during heavy rainfall.Fixed Network UpgradeRDNETTM1000 network booster/repeaters and re-ceiver stations can be deployed to upgrade a drive-by system to operate over a fixed network.Network boosters/ repeaters are supplied withmatching ESN’s and can be ordered to operate overdistances from a few hundred meters to many km.www.radio-data-networks.comIntroduction:The Radio Data Networks’s blocked sewer & drain-detection system is the result of many decades ofresearch into the design and integration of wirelessand smart sensor technology. The system is based upon our ultra low powerstate-of-the-art bulked dielectric transducer (BDT)technology that consumes less than 1000th of theenergy required by ultrasonics. The net result is amuch more frequent read rate and virtual real-timebroadcast of status without lifting a manhole cover To keep deployment and service cost to a minimumthe BDT has been designed for installation from thesurface without the need for confined space entry. There is also no need field programming, softwareor calibration. All the installer needs to do is simplyrecord the BDT’s Electronic Serial Number [ESN],the location of each instalation and set the trip pointby adjusting the length of the cable using nothingmore than cable ties. The combination of all ofthese factors makes the BDT popular with instala-tion gangs who boast instalation rates measureddozens per day. We also offer thechoice of operation on a lowpower radio band or on anOfcom allocated private li-cenced radio channel.Network ReceiversThe network receivers arenormally located alongsideexisting telemetry outsta-tions at pumping stationsetc. Receivers can be sup-plied to service anythingfrom a single to 64 BDTs.Each BDT being providedwith its own decoder cardwith an ESN that matchesthat of the BDT and its net-work booster.
