THERMOPILE©S O I L R E M E D I A T I O NLet's give back to our heritage all its valueApplications:The Thermopile© technology can be applied in situ (without excavation, even under existing buildings) or on site (with excavation but treatment on the same site in specially equipped ponds). It is also used to treat free-phase layers. It is patented under the n°1604749Principle of operation:Pollutants are extracted thanks to the contribution of heat in the ground (thermal desorption). The heating of the soil is done through a network of coaxial tubes placed in the soil, in which circulates the hot air.Hot gases always remain in the tubes, without ever entering the ground, and transmit their heat to the ground by conduction. Under the effect of the heat, the pollutants are evaporated and are piped through the external tube to a combustion chamber where they are permanently destroyed. The energy produced by organic contaminants is reused as an energy source in the decontamination cycle.Being almost not influenced by the heterogeneity of soil, this technology applies toany type of soil and other materials such as grinding residues or waste of the steelindustry.Thermopile©: A constantly evolving technologyThermopile©: assets? In situ treatment without excavation (e.g. under existing buildings) up to 20 m in depth? An immediate return on investment by returning to real-estate assets their intrinsic values? Short treatment time (a few weeks)? Fewer nuisances: no truck traffic, no smell, dusts and less noise? Efficiency proved on any type of soil (sand, clay, silt,...) and other materials (grinding residues, waste of the steel industry)? Responds to the principles of sustainable development (rational use of energy, closed and secure system)Thermopile© : a new application - Elimination of free-phase layersA free-phase layer appears when a certain amount of pollutantliquids, non-soluble and lighter than water, reaches the watertable. The liquid then accumulates in the capillary fringe, justabove the upper level of the water.Several techniques exist to extract these free-phase layers butThermopile© offers a quick, definitive and reliable treatment.Indeed, the ground heat input changes drastically the thermo-dynamic conditions of the environment (vapor pressure, viscos-ity, interfacial tensions …).These modifications therefore allow the free-phase layer to go tothermal wells formed by the heat pipes where a partial destruction of pollutants begins. The pollutants‘ stripping by produced water vapor and depression applied on the tubes provide a complete elimination of supernatant products. It is this heat/extraction combination that allows Thermopile© to guarantee elimination rates and remarkable treatment duration,up to 20 m in depth.REFERENCESBELGIUM:DALKIARemoval of tanks, groundwater drawdown and in situ treatment of polluted land by Hydrocarbons under existing buildingDELTAExcavation from 0 to -6 m and in situ treatment from -6 to-12 m of hydrocarbons pollutionAXA REAL ESTATEIn situ treatment of pollution from a tank overflow (HCT)CIT BLATONIn situ treatment of land polluted with hydrocarbons SPAQUE Rehabilitation of an industrial site near Liège.
