Then the wastewater is transported into the biological treat-ment area. During this procedure and for a period afterwards the site of the biological treatment is aerated. This means that oxygen is added in a targeted manner. In this way the sludge is “animated” and the microorganisms can do their purifying work. After aeration comes the recovery phase, when clear water is separated from the activated sludge. Now a precisely deter-mined amount of purified wastewater is discharged. Any excess sludge is then transported back into the first cham-ber.
