Bilbao ECODESIGN Meeting 2011 Wednesday 9 November 2011 (Provisional program) 15:30 Parallel session nº 1 Ecodesign in the Machine and Electrical & Electronics markets: improving the profit and loss account by innovating and anticipating the Erp Ecodesign Directive. The ErP Ecodesign Directive or Directive 2009/15/EC has established a framework in the European Union to establish regulatory Ecodesign requirements that apply to Energy-related Products (ErP). ErP products include not only those products that directly use energy (e.g. engines, household appliances, boilers, lighting, etc.), but also those that affect their consumption to some extent. The ErP Ecodesign Directive directly affects over 1,000 product categories. These products are mainly manufactured by industrial sectors that product IT, electronic, optical and electrical products, metal products and by the machine and equipment sector. GOALS ? Spotlight the environmental requirements established by multinational companies for companies in this sector. ? Showcase successful differentiation experiences and improvement of the profit and loss accounts thanks to the Ecodesign application. ? Present the different backing and technical support tools. ? Establish the benefits and implications of applying the Ihobe Ecodesign sector guides and of the ISO 14006 Ecodesign Management Standard. (electrical sector) 17:50 Discussion 18:30 Closure Bilbao ECODESIGN Meeting 2011 Wednesday 9 November 2011 (Provisional program) 15:30 Parallel session nº 2 Construction Materials Ecodesign: how to position your company on the emerging market of sustainable building and refurbishing. The construction materials sector has undergone significant changes in recent years due to the appearance of environmental legislation regarding building, along with the economic downturn that has affected the whole building macro-sector. At the environmental level, the production of construction materials and their application in the building and construction of infrastructures accounts for 50% of the material extracted from the earth's surface, and requires large amounts of fuels and electricity. It is, therefore, one of the sectors with the greatest environmental impact in Europe. In November 2009, the Energy-using Products Ecodesign European Directive (2005/32/EC) was thus rewritten, due to the need to expand its scope. It became the Energy-related Products Directive (2009/125/EC and had a major impact on construction materials. Therefore, the trend has been noted of the sector companies in Spain and Europe to certify their products by means of environmental seals, with the tendency to be to opt for national systems and prioritizing those on many occasions over European systems, such as the Europe Eco-label. GOALS ? Spotlight the environmental requirements established by multinational companies for companies in this sector. ? Showcase successful differentiation experiences thanks to the Ecodesign application. ? Present the different technical support tools. ? Establish the benefits and implications of applying the Ihobe Ecodesign sector guides and of the ISO 14006 Ecodesign Management Standard. One of the motivating factors for companies to implement environmental improvements when developing their products is the very demand for them by the clients. What would have seemed unthinkable some years ago, except on certain Scandinavian markets with a specific level of awareness, it is now an increasingly apparent reality to which companies must react. From the point of view of the Administration, there is an European commitment to work towards green public procurement, where the authorities set an example and demand is generate for environmentally friendly products. From the private point of view, the need to stand out from the competitors drives many companies to want to offer Ecodesign products, which in turn generates demand in their supply chain for more environmentally enhanced materials and components. GOALS ? Spotlight the actions being carried out by the Administration. ? Spotlight the environmental requirements that multinational establish in this respect. ? Showcase successful Ecodesign experiences, which have enabled companies to be awarded contracts or consolidate their client base. ? Present the different technical support tools. The recently approved ISO 14006 Ecodesign Management standard is underpinned by the sound experience of the successful application of over 70 companies certified by the Spanish UNE 150301:2003 Standard, which in turn was defined based on the demands of the SMEs and major corporations. This new standard, which is a flexible and cost-effective instrument, can be a turning point in the deployment of Ecodesign, an opportunity that Europe should acknowledge before its competitors.
