DuPont Electronic Polymers L.P. Case Study Dupont must ensure that its chemicals and materials consistently maintain the very highest standards. The Client Founded in 1802, DuPont operates in more than 70 countries and offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture, nutrition, electronics, communications, safety and protection, home and construction, transportation and apparel. DuPont Electronic Polymers L.P, part of DuPont Electronic Technologies, is based in Dayton, Ohio and is a global supplier of electronic chemicals and materials to the semiconductor industry and specialty intermediates for polyurethane and other applications. DuPont Electronic Polymers L.P., includes ChemFirst, a global supplier of electronic chemicals and materials to the semiconductor industry and specialty intermediates for polyurethanes and other applications, that was acquired by DuPont in 2002. The Challenge As a supplier of critical components to the semiconductor industry, Dupont Electronic Polymers L.P must ensure that its chemicals and materials maintain the very highest standards. As a result, its Electronic Grade Polymers are produced under stringently controlled conditions and are thoroughly tested to ensure the highest performance available for critical applications. Each product is typically tested for 12 metals, polydispersity, molecular weight, and transparency, and each process is controlled through statistical monitoring so that batch to batch variation is held to a minimum. Until recently, the results of these extensive testing procedures were manually recorded, calculated and analyzed, and then stored in a paper filing system. Due to the high instrument sensitivity and materials involved, each individual test could take up to 20 minutes. Further, following the acquisition of ChemFirst, a number of quality management processes needed to be better integrated with the core system. Dupont was looking for a solution that would reduce the time intensive nature of the testing procedures, and was keen to reduce the number of recording and filing errors that occurred as a result of the manual procedures. Further, DuPont was looking for a solution that would upgrade the existing manual physical filing systems to enable data and results to be centrally viewed and managed to improve enterprise-wide quality management processes. “We were very impressed with its ability to interface with our laboratory equipment and with its flexibility to support our future quality needs,” said David Mueller, DuPont LIMS Administrator. The Solution DuPont identified bizzApps as the enterprise quality management solution that would best enable the organization to centrally manage and improve the efficiency of laboratory testing and production inspection operations. The first phase of the implementation was to make data more accessible and manageable through bizzApps Quality Manager’s central online repository. To achieve this, Quality Manager needed to seamlessly integrate with DuPont’s Baan ERP. The extensive experience that bizzApps was able to demonstrate with Baan was a notable advantage. The second phase of the implementation was to interface the lab instrumentation with the bizzApps Quality Manager using Instrument Connect – a feature that transfers test results directly into the system, making them readily available throughout the organization. “bizzApps Quality Manager easily met all of our functionality requirements. We were very impressed with its ability to interface with our laboratory equipment and with its flexibility to support our future quality needs,” said David Mueller, DuPont LIMS Administrator. The Benefits The first phase of the implementation was accomplished within two months, and involved the transformation of the existing paper-based filing system to one that is a central electronic data capture and sharing system. Laboratory analysts were fully trained to ensure a full understanding of the solution, and internal processes were put in place to enable this knowledge to be shared with other departments. As a result of the new system, laboratory analysts are no longer spending valuable time transcribing test results but are instead able to allocate significantly more time to conducting tests and providing analysis of the results. Other departments are also now able to access laboratory information, and can conduct searches of the data remotely from their desktops, which has delivered significant gains in efficiency. The removal of manual recording practices has had a major impact in reducing the number of transcription errors, improving overall quality control and accuracy. The system can now provide visibility of specification violations in the raw and final data. “As customer quality standards and requirements rise, I’m sure our appreciation of the system will only grow – especially when compared to all the manual processes that used to consume much of the lab’s time. Now that we have real-time access to data across the enterprise, we look forward to seeing steady improvements in our enterprise-wide quality management processes.” said Mueller. about bizzApps bizzApps delivers the most comprehensive suite of enterprise quality management solution available to manufacturing and industrial companies. bizzApps’ provides integrated software solutions that address all aspects of enterprise quality management, from non-conformance management to supplier management, inspection management and LIMS. bizzApps’ solutions are highly process-centric solution and can be adapted to the very specific quality management needs of any company, whether in the discrete manufacturing or the process manufacturing sector.
