Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES) is a term that captures the complexity of nature and the goods and services that humans receive from it. Ecosystem service benefits generally fall into one of four main categories: provisioning services, regulating services, cultural services and supporting services. Some of the values andeconomic benefits that BES provideare reflected in markets, while others are not.Different methods have been developed to estimate the economic value of BES. The resulting estimates are useful for ensuring that more of the values can be demonstrated and captured creating incentives for better protection and more sustainable use of resources.
