ESdat Water, Gas, Soil and Rock Chemistry Monitoring Data Management Software Brochure

Produced byThe ESdat Hydrogeology and Environmental System is produced by EarthScience Information Systems; a company which specializes in storage, analysis and reporting systems for geo-environmental data.ESdat is used by many of the worlds leading and boutique environmental consultancies and site holders. ESdat is used for a range of environmental applications, the most common are: Contaminated / Industrial Sites; Groundwater Investigations; Mine Site Environmental Management; and Landfi lls.ESdat based systems provide an intuitive approach to managing environmental data, designed to allow effi cient importing, rigorous data consistency checks, powerful analysis, and easy reporting. Systems provided with ESdat are open-design so that, if desired, users can review and customize the database structure, create and use custom queries through the main user interface, and modify the user interface to suit any non-standard requirements. KEY FEATURES INCLUDE• Import data from laboratories; the fi eld; surveyors fi les; historical sources• A built-in GIS, or link to ArcGIS, MapInfo, Surfer, Google Earth and other packages• Formatted Chemistry Result Tables including guidelines, with exceedances indicated in a variety of formats• QA reports indicating fi eld and laboratory checks; such as holding times and RPD values for duplicate samples• Graphing, Trend Analysis, and other data summary toolsPrior to going to the fi eld, ESdat’s LSpecs extension enables you to streamline your planning and data collection activities. LSpecs allows you to create a digital sampling plan that can be downloaded to your PDA or Tablet PC running PLog Environmental; automating the data collection process.PLog Environmental facilitates nearly any environmental, geo-environmental or geotechnical fi eld logging task. The wizard-like interface guides the user through the sampling plans and data collection process to minimize sampling errors and omissions. It will even verify you have completed the tests assigned via the sample plan.Once you have completed the fi eld data collection, simply upload the data to ESdat.DATA IMPORTINGEasy import of validated (correct) data is critical to the effi cient and reliable usage of the system. Data can be added directly onto the map; to a table; or imported in bulk from Excel. SAMPLE PLANNING & FIELD DATA COLLECTIONHistorical Chemistry is imported straight from Excel. Where the data is invalid (such as an invalid date or an invalid result value) the error is highlighted in purple. Users can correct values, and where relevant, select valid values from drop-down lists.Laboratory data can be imported directly using a specifi c format supported by many laboratories. This format includes all the Quality Assurance information required to meet the requirements of the USEPA, and the requirements of other jurisdictions. ANALYSISOnce laboratory data is imported, ESdat can perform a detailed laboratory sample analysis, comparing laboratory submissions with imported laboratory data. Comparisons include:• Matching of samples submitted (including QA Samples) with reported laboratory data.• Matching of analysis requests submitted and those reported by the laboratory including tracking of the “total” or “fi ltered” status water samples.• Tracking of laboratory reports received, their acceptance, status and associated comments.CHEMISTRY TABLESChemistry Output Tables automatically show results alongside environmental standards, exceedances and summary statistics. Results can be grouped or arranged in a specifi c order; can be oriented with the compounds across the top, or down the left; and exceedances of environmental standards can be indicated by font changes or highlighting (shown below). GIS OUTPUTSAn inbuilt GIS off ers all the basic functionality required for producing report quality maps. Data can alternatively be exported to ArcMap, Mapinfo, Surfer or Google Earth using ESRI Shape, MapInfo MIF, KML or text fi les, or live ODBC database linkages. Images below show 1) stacked chemistry results, and 2) water level elevations coloured by maximum value.BOREHOLE LOGSBorehole logs and cross-sections (fence diagrams) are stored within the system, and are displayed by automatic data export to gINT or WinLog. The data is read directly from the ESdat database, preventing the need to duplicate data.CHEMISTRY QUALITY ASSURANCE (QA) TABLESChemistry data is often assessed against strict QA protocols. The ESdat QA checker has the ability to assess chemistry data for the following QA tests: • Field and Interlaboratory Duplicates• Field and Laboratory Blanks• Holding Times • Certifi ed Reference Materials • Laboratory Duplicates• Matrix and Trip Spikes• Laboratory Control Samples • SurrogatesAn example of Field Duplicate reporting of RPD’s is given below:GRAPHINGGraphs can be produced and exportedto Excel with a number of options. The image below shows electrical conductivity graphed with stream fl ow.Graphs can include a Mann Kendall or Linear Regression trend analysis, and Environmental standards can beincluded on the graph. OTHER TABLESAll data can be output directly to Excel, or to Excel via a Pivot Table. Two examples to the right show water level depths in two diff erent formats. The data is the same. If you are not sure it is likely you will want the Access based system. The Access based system is best for small to mid-sized companies, or companies that don’t require central database storage.Access based systems have the following advantages:• The project database is stored with your other project data (ie in a project directory)• Databases can be easily customized on a per-project basis• Doesn’t require input by your IT staff , or require allocation of a database server (ie is a purely desktop application, like Excel)SQL Server based systems have the following advantages:• Centralized data storage (one database holds all the data)• Ability to simultaneously access data for multiple or all projects or sites• One site can be associated with multiple projects (eg a mine site)• One project can be associated with multiple sites (eg service station contracts)• Tiered permission levels (read only, read-write, unrestricted)SQL SERVER DATABASE UPGRADEOrganizations can choose to use an SQL Server database instead of an Access database. This requires an additional upgrade purchase. (The organization will need to have a license for SQL Server 2005 or 2008, or use the free version).SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCEAll purchases are provided with 12 months access to software support (phone and email) and software updates. This can be renewed annually at a cost of 20% of the license cost at the time of renewal.
