Commonapplications include pre-concentration of dairy or foodstreams prior to evaporation, polishing of evaporatorcondensate, and purification of process water.Nanofiltration (NF)Nanofiltration is a unique filtration process in-between UFand RO designed to achieve highly specific separation of lowmolecular weight compounds such as minerals and saltsfrom complex process streams. Typical applications includede-ashing of dairy products, recovery of hydrolyzed proteins, concentration of sugars and purification of soluble dyes andpigments.Ultrafiltration (UF)Ultrafiltration is a selective separation step used to bothconcentrate and purify medium to high molecular weightcomponents such as plant and dairy proteins, carbohydratesand enzymes. Common areas of application are wheyprotein concentration, gelatin de-ashing and concentration, and clarification of fruit juices.Microfiltration (MF)Microfiltration is a low pressure means of separating largemolecular weight suspended or colloidal compounds fromdissolved solids. Applications include cell harvesting fromfermentation broths, fractionation of milk proteins, cornsyrup clarification and CIP chemical recovery.Particulates, colloidsProteins, polysaccharidesSugars, amino acidsSaltsWaterParticulates, colloidsProteins, polysaccharidesSugars, amino acidsSaltsWaterParticulates, colloidsProteins, polysaccharidesSugars, amino acidsSaltsWaterParticulates, colloidsProteins, polysaccharidesSugars, amino acidsSaltsWaterCross-flow membrane filtration technology is quickly gainingglobal acceptance as an important manufacturing step inmany of the process lines in the food, dairy, pharmaceutical/biotechnology and starch and sweetener industries worldwide. The ability to produce very specific separations at low or ambient temperatures with no phase change can, inmany applications, make membrane filtration a much morecost-effective solution than more conventional methods suchas rotary vacuum filtration or filter presses.Membrane filtration is a pressure driven technology withpore sizes ranging from 100 molecular weight to 5 microns. The technologies included in membrane filtration are:Introduction to Membrane FiltrationFiltration SpectrumMol. The range includes a number of both poly-meric and inorganic membranes:Polymeric• Spiral — Due to their compact layout andrelatively large amount of membrane areaper element, spirals are good cost-effectivesolutions to high volume applications withminimal or no suspended solids, with theprimary advantage being both low capitalinvestment and energy costs. They areavailable for all types of filtration frommicrofiltration to reverse osmosis.• Tubular — Highly resistant to plugging, tubular membranes are typically usedwhen the feed stream contains largeamounts of suspended solids or fibrouscompounds. • Hollow Fiber Membrane — Extremelyhigh packing density and open channeldesign; offers the possibility of backwashingfrom the permeate side, particularly suitedfor low solids liquid streams.Inorganic• Ceramic — Ideally used for value addedapplications such as fractionation ofproteins in milk, cell harvesting etc., aswell as separations of process streams atextreme pH and temperature conditionsand presence of solvents.• Stainless Steel — Rugged design, espe-cially effective for demanding applicationswith aggressive process conditions or feedstreams with elevated particulate solids or viscosity.BAR 68.9 - 27.6 BAR 41.4 - 6.9 BAR 13.8 - 4.8 BAR 8.6 - 1 BARPressureWide Range of Modules —Customized DesignsGEA Filtration has been supplyingreplacement organic and inorganicmembranes to the process industry forjust about as long as there have beenmembranes to supply. A pioneer offiltration technology, today we lead thefield as the largest, independent source of process membranes worldwide. Wesupply membranes for virtually everymanufacturer’s filtration system andmost process applications. During the 30 years or so we’ve been in this business, we’ve learned a thing or two about our customers. For one,we realize membranes aren’t usuallyforemost in your mind – in fact you’dprobably sooner forget about them. And we also know that “forgettingabout them” means different things to different dairies. Some customers simply want a partnerthat can provide a dependable, econom-ical supply of quality membranes.Others would like to subcontract sometechnical responsibility, and a growingnumber prefer to outsource the entire replacement, maintenance andoptimization of their membrane-relatedoperations. At GEA Filtration we cater to all threescenarios – and just about everything in between. Our service concept is bornof an outward facing view of the world. We let you decide the nature of ourpartnership and adapt our servicesaccordingly. Size and serviceThis flexible approach is made possiblethanks to our success in uniting thebenefits of quantity and quality underone roof. That’s to say, on the one handhigh inventory levels, purchasingmuscle and logistical reach mean we’reable to offer an extremely responsive, reliable supply chain and highlycompetitive rates. On the other hand, a vast support network and detailedunderstanding of process applicationsand membranes means we’re also in a position to provide qualified adviceon membrane selection and processrefinement. Flexible supportWe’ve channeled these skills and experience into a service program that lets you decide the degree of assistance you receive. Some customersare highly versant in the finer points of membrane filtration.Others prefer to leave things to us. The only thing we insist on, is being there wheneverand wherever you need us.Membranes are a standardized product– your supplier doesn’t have to be GEA Filtration offers the followingthree service packages:A.
