Geotechnical & Environmental Engineering Brochure

GeotechnicalGeotechnical engineering provides the knowledge to ensure buildings and other structures are designed to suit the ground conditions of the development site.Cardno has an enviable reputation in the geotechnical field for delivering authoritative advice across diverse projects and sites. Our designs comply with stringent company standards and government legislation, and our activities ensure a safe working environment for employees and project participants.Combining a practical and pragmatic approach to geotechnical engineering, Cardno uses the latest in laboratory testing technology to assist in developing projects of all sizes across Australia and overseas. Our geotechnical investigations include: Industrial, commercial and residential sites `River, canal and reclamation sites `Bridges `Harbours, wharves and jetties `Railways `Roads and pavements `Retaining structures `Excavations `Earthworks `Mine infrastructure. `Our range of services includes: Geotechnical investigations, including `drilling on land and over water Providing geotechnical design parameters `based on previous geotechnical investigations Road pavement investigations `Providing pavement designs, including `heavy duty (mine haul road and airport) pavements and pavement rehabilitation Analysis of geotechnical data including `slope stability, pile design, footing design and settlement projections Soft ground engineering, including `reclamation, sheet piling and dredging Reviewing and preparing geotechnical `investigation briefs Reviewing geotechnical reports prepared `externally Environmental engineering, including `acid sulphate and soil contamination investigations and remediation Testing, both laboratory and field, of `materials for the construction and mining industries Geomechanical testing of rock core for the `mining industry.Cardno’s geotechnical teams identify and solve problems involving soil, rock and groundwater. Working in collaboration with the client, engineering professionals and other teams to provide cost-effective solutions, Cardno tailors its professional and technical services to each project milestone. We pride ourselves on our technical proficiency and professionalism. About CardnoCardno is an integrated professional services provider, delivering specialist advice to create or improve the physical and social infrastructure that underpins communities around the world. Our team is comprised of leading advisors who plan, design, manage and deliver sustainable projects and programs.Contactgeotechnical@cardno.comwww.cardno.comNorthern Pipeline InterconnectorCaboolture / Sunshine Coast, QueenslandAs part of the South East Queensland (SEQ) water grid, the Northern Pipeline Interconnector (NPI) connects dams, weirs and other water storages to move surplus water between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. At about 100 kilometres in length, the NPI has the potential capacity to transport 65 million litres of potable water per day between the Sunshine Coast dams and the SEQ water grid.Responsible for the geotechnical investigation for both Stage 1 of the NPI project from Morayfield Reservoir to Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Stage 2 from Lander Shute WTP to Noosa WTP, Cardno:Worked closely with Southern Regional Water `Pipeline Alliance and Northern Network Alliance, with other companies and individuals engaged by these alliances and liaised with the general publicCarried out geotechnical investigations for `river and creek crossings for both tunnel boring and bridging options. This included providing soil and rock parameters as well as rock mass permeability testing using Packer testing equipmentPerformed geotechnical investigations for road `and rail crossings, slope stability assessments, environmental impact study inputs, acid sulfate soils and thrust block terrain analysis.Hamilton Island AirportHamilton Island, QueenslandCardno worked with Hamilton Island Resort to progressively strengthen the runway, taxiway and apron pavements to accommodate a major increase in aircraft movements. Cardno’s responsibilities since 1986 have `included design of the pavement rehabilitation works, project management and construction supervision Pavement strengthening was achieved initially `by new construction using cement- treated crushed rock, requiring airport closure for a fortnightSince 1996, pavement reconstruction has `involved the bitumen treatment of existing pavement materials. The airport has remained operational during these timesCardno maintains an ongoing role in the `proactive management of Hamilton Island Airport pavements.Mackay Regional Council’s 2006–2007 Road Improvement Program Mackay, QueenslandCardno provided pavement rehabilitation strategies aimed to provide a significant increase in life – typically 15 to 25 years – for the roads, without costly and conventional major reconstruction. The program included the upgrading of more `than 17 kilometres of city streets and rural roadsRehabilitation techniques included overlay, `widening, rip and recompact with additions of new pavement material, cement treatment and bitumen treatment in various combinationsCardno undertook the pavement investigations, `laboratory testing of pavement and subgrade materials, and pavement design.Arkaba HouseDarwin, Northern TerritoryCardno worked with Zarplex Constructions to provide geotechnical advice for the design and construction of Arkaba House, a multi-storey residential and commercial complex in Darwin’s CBD. The site is at the edge of a plateau of strong `silicified claystone, underlain by weak claystone and phyllite in which tunnels built during World War II are located. The strong rock is only 2.5-4 metres thick beneath the building footprintCardno was able to demonstrate that high `level pad footings could be used without overstressing the foundation rock or causing damage to the tunnels, thus avoiding the need for more expensive deep (pile) footings.CK0110RECYCLE REUSE REDUCEPrinted on Monza satin recycled paper using vegetable oil based inkCardno has worked with the Mackay Regional Council (formerly the Pioneer Shire Council) for more than 25 years. Throughout this time, Cardno has demonstrated their ability to deliver solutions that achieve optimal timeframe and cost resource solutions for our capital works projects. The team continues to deliver services above our expectations. Graeme Hawes, Manager – Asset Services Mackay Regional Council
