Hills provides not just a disposal service asdescribed here, but also a comprehensive waste collection service,offering containers for every need and providing consignmentnotes on your behalf.If your business produces hazardous waste, you have a ‘duty of care’ to make sure it is disposed ofproperly. Hazardous waste is defined by Article 1 (4) of the Hazardous Waste Directive ie it is wasteon the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) having hazardous properties. The European WasteCatalogue was implemented in 2002 and the definition of the EWC code for any waste will ultimatelyclassify the waste stream and, therefore, determine the type of landfill at which it can be disposed.WHAT IS HAZARDOUS WASTE?Wastes intended for hazardous landfills are usually assessed against two sets of limit values:? The limit values associated with the EWC and those thresholds laid down by the EA publicationTechnical Guidance WM-2. These determine whether the waste is hazardous waste and relateto a mirror or blue entry. This applies unless the waste is covered by an absolute entry. Anabsolute entry in the EWC is red in colour and defines a hazardous waste.? The limit values set by the waste acceptance criteria for hazardous landfills. These limit valuesare different and may involve different parameters. For example, although a waste could behazardous because it contains an organic carcinogen, it might be unacceptable to a hazardouslandfill because it contains too much leachable chloride. Guidance can be provided for the registration of customers as hazardous waste producers withthe Environment Agency.(producing > 200kg per annum)? Guidance and advice can be provided on the correct completion of consignment notes for thetransfer of hazardous waste? We can provide facilities for the disposal of non-hazardous waste at Calne and Blunsdon, andhazardous waste at Purton? We have facilities at Blunsdon for disposal of asbestos, both fibrous and bonded.OUR WASTE ACCEPTANCE PROCESSIf you have waste you wish to dispose of:1) Send us a completed waste acceptance questionnaire, together with details of the waste, forassessment and classification. Details of the waste may include a full chemical analysis, soilreport, ground survey, manufacturer’s data safety sheets (MSDS) etc plus any other informationrelating to those processes responsible for producing the waste and/or its composition2) Based on published EA guidance, we will classify the waste (hazardous / non-hazardous / inert).Waste management licences and IPPC permits issued by the Environment Agency put certainrestrictions on what can be taken into landfill. Hills will, therefore, assess the waste todetermine its acceptability into landfill, based on legal and licensing constraints3) Classification and a formal quote will be issued for tipping into landfill. If haulage is required, thecost will be included in our quotation4) If the waste is deemed to be hazardous, further testing will be required. Before waste can beaccepted into landfill it must undergo and pass a specific two-part leachate test, referred to asa “WAC (Waste Acceptance Criteria) Test”.
