The resultis an on-going technological upgrading of its productsand applications, including separation technologies suchas evaporation/crystallization, electrodialysis, chromatography and pervaporation.Industrial process applications include biotechnologyand pharmaceutical applications, where HAR developedits own know-how, as well as applications in food anddairy, fine chemicals, petrochemical and chemical field.According to the increasingly stringent environmentallegislation, HAR designs and supplies complete plants“Zero Discharge Water Recycling”, an advanced processto treat effluents obtaining water suitable to reuse or todischarge according to the law restrictions. The goal isreached through the combination of differenttechnologies, from bioHAR® Membrane Bioreactorthrough membrane processes, pervaporation andevaporation.HAR has developed and realized patented systems forLandfill Leachate Treatment, plants with an economicalprocess, effective and reliable.HAR pursues ISO 9001 QualityPolicy, to enable the maximumsatisfaction of its customersby responding appropriately totheir needs and requirements.HAR approach to separationproblemsThe beginning of all HAR systems design is theevaluation of the customer’s objectives andrequirement. Test facilities and pilot plant are availablefor feasibility study and bench or semi-industrial trials. Preliminary tests are carried out in HAR laboratories onsmall liquid samples providing separation performanceand data useful for industrial plant scale-up as well ascost projections or economic models to determinate full-scale operation and required capital costs.Pilot plant verification at customer’s site isrecommended to generate data under actual fieldconditions. 3Disposal of spent/exhaust solutions or generally wastewater is one of the biggest problems of industries. Several years ago HAR widened its portfolio oftechnologies, obtaining suitable and effective solutionsto the “waste water problem”. HAR solutions are developed through feasibility studiesand site tests, selecting the suitable technologyaccording to the effluent characteristics and to thetreated water quality requirement.Treatment method selection criteria:?Applicability of the process, relating to effluentcharacteristics? Environmental factors, including weather andterritorial aspects such as noise and odors? Performance, in terms of quality of the treatedeffluent and legislation parameters in order todischarge or reuse the water? Investment and running costsEffluent TreatmentDischarge standards are becoming more and morestringent over the time and the result of this“tightening” would be Zero Discharge.Industries need water at various purity degrees forproduction processes or other internal uses. Combiningthe various technologies HAR is in position to providefor any specific solution to wastewater treatmentmeeting the standards for water discharge or reuse.4BioHAR® Membrane Bioreactor is a combination of anactivated sludge biological system and an ultrafiltrationsystem, for an optimal removal of organic contaminantsin waste streams. Two different bioHAR® configurations are available:sidestream and submerged. In submerged configuration the membrane unit isinstalled inside the aeration tank and the driving forcecan be the static head or a suction from permeate side. In sidestream configuration the membrane module is anexternal unit. The activated sludge is continuouslypumped from aeration tank through the membranesystem and the biomass is recycled back to the tank.In the oxidation tank biodegradable substances areeliminated and ammonia and nitrogen-basedcompounds can also be removed, while the membranefiltration system removes 100% of the suspended solidsgiving a fully sterilized treated water. One of theadvantages of bioHAR® system is the stable filtrationrate without membrane cleaning problems. The membrane filtration system replaces theconventional phase of sedimentation by gravity andenables the retention of the biological sludge in theoxidation tank keeping a much higher concentrationBioHAR ®Membrane Bioreactorthan in a conventional biological system. Themembrane, being an absolute barrier for the sludge, isalso avoiding the entrainment of sludge in the treatedeffluent, trouble that often occurs in the traditionalsettling tanks because of bulking phenomena.BioHAR® Membrane Bioreactor is a high efficiency stepof “Zero Discharge Water Recycling” process and is themost suitable pre-treatment for a further processingthrough reverse osmosis.Advantages of bioHAR®? Elimination of the settling tank and high quality of thetreated effluent?High efficiency for the removal of organic load due tohigh biomass concentration and retention of highmolecular weight compounds ?Reduced production of sludge ? Increase of tolerance of normally toxic substances for abiological system, due to the high ratio biomass/toxic ?Small footprint ? Low operating costs ?Membranes high chemical resistance?Stable membrane filtration rates?Guaranteed membranes life5Zero Dischargeand Water RecyclingHAR activity is focused on the design and supply ofinnovative processes for waste water treatment, withthe goal to reuse water meeting high purity standardsand to reduce the waste to a minimum volume with thelowest investment and operating costs. In the view to offering advantageous technical-economical solutions, HAR is cooperating withinternational research institutes and world leadingcompanies of the field, allowing its team of experts toprovide solutions and systems based on thecombination of different technologies.Membrane separation (Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration,Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis) is the keytechnology of HAR process, a “clean” technology notusing either chemicals or heat, not generating either airpollution or noise problems, allowing removal ofcontaminants, water recycling and byproducts recovery.Depending on the quality of the effluent to be treated, the first step of “Zero Discharge Water Recycling”process is bioHAR® Membrane Bioreactor system, thatis a high efficiency combination of biological activatedsludge and membrane processes. The second step is NARO® system, a registered mark foran advanced membrane process that can concentratethe residual contaminants coming from bioHAR® to veryhigh dissolved solids content, achieving excellentenergy efficiency and optimal membranes performance. The NARO® concentrate, still liquid, can befurther reduced in volume through theevaporation / crystallization step, while the NARO®permeate can be directly reused or dischargedaccording to the local regulations.6NARO® system is a patented reverse osmosis systemable to concentrate the total dissolved solids to higherlevels than traditional reverse osmosis systems, withbetter energy efficiency and optimal membranesperformance. NARO® system is a multistage system with feed andbleed configuration, i.e. with continuous discharge ofthe concentrated phase, that with a variable distributionof the operating pressure in the loops gives thefollowing advantages compared with the traditionalsystems:NARO® system is extremely flexible as regardsoperating parameters; the working pressure, driving thevolumetric concentration factor as well as the permeateflux, is automatically controlled in a wide pressurerange. In NARO® system the membrane area isdistributed in aseries ofindependent loops(each onecomposed byrecirculation pump, instrumentation, membranes) withseries/parallelconfiguration of themembranesdepending on the characteristics of the fluid to betreated.NARO ® SystemHAR started to design evaporators and crystallizers ascomplementary equipment to membrane separationsystems for liquid waste treatment. The particularrequirements of the handled fluidsled HAR to develop its ownevaporation "state of the art" andto manufacture the equipmentsfollowing the international qualitystandard according to the companymission. The main features of HARevaporators can be summarized asfollows:?Construction materials "customtailored" to the special needs of every processstream. ? Possibility of handling fouling fluids and solids intothe stream. ? Low energy consumptions through multi effectsevaporation. ?Special design to reduce entrainment into thecondensate. ? Possibility of designing theequipment as a crystallizerand discharging slurries upto 50% of solids by volume. ?Heating and condensingmedia selected case by caseto increase the energyconservation of the production system. ? Full sinergy with upstream and downstream plants. ? "Easy and safe" control and automation system. HAR can offer a range of evaporators from 500 to over10.000 kg/hour of condensate, in the main metal alloysand lined materials. Evaporation and crystallization testscan be performed at HAR laboratories, where pilotplants are available for bench and semi-industrial trials.Evaporators & Crystallizers? Lower energy consumption?Best performance of the membranes, in terms ofrejection and fluxes ?More competitive investment and operating costs7Landfill leachate is heavily polluted with various mineraland organic materials.HAR system for the treatment of such effluent isessentially based on membrane separation technology;however, depending either on the variability of thecharacteristics of the leachate and on the concentratedisposal problems, HAR can offer suitable processcombinations. The system is able to treat the leachate to make theeffluent suitable to discharge according to the mostsevere law restrictions.Process descriptionHAR process for leachate treatment is based onmembrane processes.Depending on the feed characteristics and on therequired water quality for discharge, the leachate istreated through a continuous two/three-stagesprocessing:Landfill LeachateTreatment1st stage: ULTRAFILTRATION /bioHAR® MembraneBioreactor2nd stage: NARO® system3rd stage: NARO® systemA further step of the treatment developed by HAR is thetreatment of the final concentrate waste by evaporationor other technologies which can allow a easier disposalat the lowest cost.?Discharge according to law restriction?Constant performance with variable feedcharacteristics ?High automation level ?Absence of gas emissions ?Small footprint?Very competitive investment and operating cost?Guaranteed operating costs M E M B R A N E S E PA R AT I O N S Y S T E MItaly (Head office) :Hydro Air Research ItaliaStrada Provinciale 181, n° 11 - 26833 Merlino (LO) - Italytel: +39 02 9066601 - fax: +39 02 90666030www.hydair.come-mail - har@hydair.comChinaHydro Air Research Beijing Representative OfficeRoom No.1601A, Air China Plaza, No. 36 XiaoYun RoadChaoYang District, Beijing, Chinatel: +86 10 84475581/582 - fax: +86 10 84475583www.hydair.com.cne-mail - harchina@hydair.comHydro Air Research Italia in the World
