Zinc Phosphide is a chemical compound commonly used for rodent control. It is a dark grey, crystalline substance that is insoluble in water and alcohol. The chemical is often sold in the form of bait pellets, granules, dust or tracking powder, and has a garlic-like odour that attracts rodents. When ingested, the acid in the animal`s stomach converts Zinc Phosphide into phosphine, which is toxic to the animal.
