At this stage of the Forest Cadastre the development of Forest Maps concerns fire-stricken and protected forest areas. Forest Maps determine the boundaries of areas governed under the protective legal framework of the forestry law, namely, forests and forestlands. The development of Forest Maps aims at the spatial (geographic) and temporal (past and present time) recording and mapping of forests and forestlands. The procedure consists of the identification of areas covered with forest vegetation either today and/or in the past, the geocoding of such areas and their representation according to the technical specifications for the development of Forest Maps. The vegetation status in the past is investigated using historical aerial photos, mainly captured in 1945 & 1960. Following the same pattern, the recording and mapping of the current state of forests and forestlands is inquired by the interpretation of aerial photos captured during the period 2007-2009 and validated through field surveys. Recording and mapping of forests and forestlands aims at the: - Environmental protection of forests, forestlands and grasslands/meadows. - Projection of the Greek government's titles regarding forests, forestlands and grasslands/meadows in the procedures of the National Cadastre project and the integrated investigation of ownership status. - Identification and securing of the state property. - Configuration of the basic informational infrastructures required for the development of the Forest Inventory.
