An acoustic correlator can then be used at pre determined locations to precisely locate the leaks in the system.Acoustic AmplifierAcoustic Correlator for Precise Location• This method is based on the analysis and correlation of vibrations transmitted to a computer by radio waves. The vibrations created by the leak are captured using twopiezoelectric sensors which amplify the signal and transmit it to the central processingunit. The correlation of the two curves using the correlator indicates the location of theleak.• The use of the correlator makes it possible to carry out the leak detection survey at anytime of the day, as the correlator and the sensors benefit from the combination of thetwo correlation modes:“real time only” and “real time + frequential” which optimizes thevarious filters. Several curves of “filtered” results are posted and the best is highlighted.These simultaneous, multiple correlations and the automatic checking of convergenceresult measurements ensure the precision of the leak locations.• However, following leak repairs, it is always recommended that the rehabilitatedpipe segment be checked because a smaller leak can be concealed by a larger leak.APRIL 2008 / PRINTED IN CANADA / ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
