Maximizing Well Performance Through Directional Drilling Brochure
Maximizing Well PerformanceThrough Directional DrillingWHY DIRECTIONAL DRILLING?Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) can be usedfor water supply and or groundwater rechargeapplications. Groundwater often flowspreferentially along laterally extensiveconductive zones, i.e. a widespread horizontalgravel or sand layers, or through near verticalfracture sets in low permeability bedrock.Directed Technologies Drilling uses HDDtechniques to maximize well performance inthese and many other settings. The followingare some example applications that demonstratethe advantages of directional drilling.1) SOURCE WATER FOR FILTRATION/DESALINIZATIONMany public water supplies rely on surface water orsaltwater as a starting point for their finished water.A directionally drilled horizontal well aligned neara river or beach can provide a consistent qualityDirected Technologies Drilling can apply horizontal directionaldrilling to your water resources project. In many applications, directional drilling can increase productivity, decrease filtrationcosts, replace recharge basins or create passive water supplies.Lateral ThinkingYields Better SolutionsWATER RESOURCES AND DIRECTIONAL DRILLINGDirected Technologies Drilling, Inc.(DTD) is a leader in horizontaldirectional drilling (HDD) technology. Our objective is complete clientsatisfaction. We apply experience andinnovative thinking to provide qualityservice that is unrivaled in the industry.DTD has the most experienced teamof professionals in the business.James Doesburg, President, is arecognized authority on HDD andpioneered many of its innovationsand environmental applications.Principals and project managers haveacademic degrees in geology orhydrogeology and are recognizedauthorities in the field by groupsincluding the Colorado Center forEnvironmental Management, theUniversity of Wisconsin and theNational Ground Water Association.DTD has offices in Washington stateand Pennsylvania and has completedprojects in 29 U.S. states, Mexico,Europe and Japan.Coupling technical experience with anunblemished safety record and a teamof HAZWOPER trained employees,DTD is the clear choice for yourdirectional environmental drilling needs.Directed Technologies Drilling, Inc.8626 South 228th StreetKent, WA 98031800.239.5950info@horizontaldrill.comhorizontaldrill.comWATER RESOURCES AND DIRECTIONAL DRILLINGDTD’s Advantage: Surface-to-Surface and Blind WellsDirected Technologies Drilling, Inc. horizontal installations enablethe versatility of choosing surface-to-surface (double-entrycompletion) or blind (single-entry completion) holes.Surface-to-surface completions are our most common installation. With both an entry and exit pit, surface-to-surface wells arefrequently easier to maintain, less expensive to install and can holdmultiple pumps.Blind completions are most frequently used in cases of limitedaccess locations or in situations that require less surface disruption.Disadvantages of blind completions include limited length, more difficult development and greater expense.Directed Technologies Drilling, Inc.800.239.5950 :: info@horizontaldrill.com :: horizontaldrill.com(low solids, perhaps lower salinity) highvolume water source for filtration, therebydecreasing long term operation and filtrationcosts. These wells would be similar inprinciple and design to a Rainey well.2) GROUNDWATER RECHARGEIn some regions horizontal wells can replacerecharge basins. This can have two benefits:no loss of water to evapotranspirationand directing recharge below orbetween aquitards.3) TAPPING THIN SANDS AND GRAVELSMany aquifers are of limited thickness butextend laterally for significant distance. One directionally drilled well havinghundreds of feet of screen can be drilled inthe producing zone, even if the producingzone is as thin as one foot. Many tens ofvertical wells would be needed to equal theproductivity of one directionally drilled wellin this setting.4) PASSIVE WATER SUPPLIESDirectionally drilled wells have been installedon hill or mountain sides to passively providewater, essentially creating a spring-typesupply. This type of well can be used forpublic water supply, water bottling, or evensomething as simple as creatinggroundwater sourced wetlands.CONTACT US TO LEARN MOREThe above applications highlight the manyways that directionally drilled wells can beused for water resource applications. Please contact us to discuss your waterresources challenges.
