The special shape of the screen and single body
of the frame mean the following advantages:
It guarantees the correct operation
of the machine, regardless of the
irregular shape of the civil engineer-
ing work.
It allows the system to be comprised
of different modules in different
sizes.
For this reason, there are no limits
to the size of the system, as it can
be module. It can also be installed
in any existing sink without making
significant changes to civil works.
The machine is designed so as to re-
quire no regular maintenance in view
of the installation position, making
it difficult for operators to reach.
The choice of materials and the
construction type has been made to
guarantee maximum durability and
reliability over time.
The machine is kept clean by the
flowing water through the channel
and the specific shape of the bars
and rakes. To ensure the machine
is kept clean, it is regularly moved
to prevent potential problems that
may occur due to long periods of
inactivity. This can be programmed
from the electrical panel, setting an
operating time of about 3-4 minutes
every 30-45 day.
The machine will start to operate
when rainfall events cause the drain
network to overflow. Consent to
cleaning is enabled via clean contact,
via a level probe or other signal.
The machine is completely made
in stainless steel, including the oil
hydraulic actuator to move it and the
tank of the oil hydraulic control unit.
The metal structural work is com-
pletely assembled in the workshop
to guarantee the correct assembly
and operation of all parts as well as
to speed up the time required to put
it into service. Erection is also quick
and easy.
To guarantee maximum reliability
and stability over time, the machine
is fixed to the existing site using
anchor plugs.
The machine is built in compliance
with the EC directive and all other
safety requirements of the various
competent authorities.
The client is responsible for:
the civil works to house the screen,
as well as the works required for the
electrical panel and control unit plus
the ducting for the wiring needed
to connect the screen to the control
unit and the level probe and control
unit for water level and consent to
screen cleaning.
The machine will be provided with
use and maintenance manual.

McSCREEN,
A NEW “DRAINAGE” FILTER DEVICE
Technology tailored to the environment. The clever way to treat water.
Our experience in the water treat-
ment industry and screening is be-
hind our McScreen, developed from
the amalgamation of a screen with
waste recovery and a screen that
contains the waste. Based on this
idea, we have fitted a smart prism
rake inside the bars. This in turn
has allowed us to build a modular
machine that adapts perfectly to
any situation and with relatively low
costs.

Friulana Costruzioni s.r.l. from
Vigonovo di Fontanafredda (PN)
has patented a new filter device
for sewage networks.
A beneficial tool for manufacturers
and managers of purification plants,
for town and city councils, consor-
tiums, and municipal companies, as
well as for industries, engineering
companies and building firms.
The filtering device is simple, mod-
ular and versatile, but at the same
time it is hardwearing and built to
last. The system is low mainte-
nance, which is an important and
useful factor, considering the hos-
tile environment and difficulty when
it comes to accessing the sewage
network in which the operators
have to act.
The system is equipped with a
moving cleaning device which has
a special “V” shape, an ingenious
placement and specific structural
characteristics, all of which mean it
is most efficient when it comes to
pushing back solid objects that due
to rainfall and higher water levels
in the main channel of the drain-
age network, can easily block the
screens on the filtering devices in
the vent. This is where the excess
liquid in the main trough is directed
before being discharged into rivers,
lakes or the sea. Safeguarding the
environment is another reason why
investments need to be made in
cutting-edge filtering devices with
proven effectiveness and operation
that, compared to more obso-
lete solutions, are able to prevent
system collapse caused through
blockage or overload.
The “rake elements” are rigid,
non-deformable and feature a “V”-
shaped front projecting section;
their singular slide action between
the lengthways bars of the vertical
screen, with dual travel upwards
and downwards, guarantees remov-
al of solids and their re-issue into
the main channel of the sewage
mains, towards the final collection
point.
A programmable control device
prevents the cleaning device and
relevant drive mechanism from
staying idle for too long and com-
promising correct operation, even
in the absence of rain.
Another specific feature of the
whole filtering system is the “an-
gled” layout of the vertical screen
bars, which facilitates the passage
of the flow into the side vents,
making it easier to detach solids
removed by the cleaning device,
allowing them to fall into the main
channel, through the action of
gravity.
The machine has been made even
more versatile by the placing of
several filtering devices alongside
one another, for modular com-
positions that are flexible and
easily adapted to suit the size and
capacity of any channel, without
significant interruptions in liquid in
the direction of the runoff trough
between one screen and the next.
The machine has the following main parts:
Fixed bar screen, made with cold-
rolled plates; the bars are angled to
the current, creating a Coanda ef-
fect, pulling the water and increasing
the flow speed and reducing the risk
of moving bodies, such as branches,
passing through the bars.
Press-formed sheet frame, manu-
factured in a single body and mobile
structure with 2 cleaning rakes. The
structure is kept in position by a
system that guarantees the correct
alignment between the cleaning
rakes and the fixed screen, reducing
the necessary force for handling to a
minimum.
Oil hydraulic driver to move the
mobile structure and oil hydraulic
power unit with hoses to connect to
the actuator;
Electric control panel with PLC to
complete.
Technology tailored to the environment.
The clever way to treat water.
Floodway self-cleaning
bar screen to trap material.
How does the Coanda effect work?
Technical description
The Coanda effect takes its name from Ru-
manian aeronautical engineer, Henri Coanda
(known for creating the first reaction propul-
sion plane, the Coanda-1910).
Coanda discovered that a jet of fluid is at-
tracted by a nearby surface. The particles in
direct contact will lose velocity due to friction,
while the outermost particles will tend to
preserve their union with the inner ones, and
to “crush” them, causing them to maintain
their direction.
Friulana Costruzioni uses the potential of
this effect to separate the water flow from
a build-up of materials, such as leaves,
branches and other floating elements,
making sure that they are removed and
returned to the main channel of the sewage
network, toward the screening system of
the treatment downstream.
