All functionsare controlled by an embedded microprocessor.Once the analysis has been started, measure-ments are performed and data is collected by thebuilt-in datalogger. With standard settings thedatalogger has a recording capacity of 4 weeks.GoldTrap Amalgamation SystemFor use in the UT-3000 a new trapping system hasbeen developed:the Mercury GoldTrap, which isone of the key components of the system. It con-sists of a wafer thin ceramic tube which has beencarefully crafted to achieve minimum thermalinertia. The tube has been packed with ultrapuregold and supports a heating coil on its outside. The Mercury GoldTrap reveals sharp and highpeaks and an excellent long-term stability. As air is used for purging the trap during the heatingstep, possible contaminations are oxidized andswept off thus preventing from passivation.Atomic Absorption DetectorThe detector used in the UT-3000 provides a maxi-mum of sensitivity, precision and stability. A highfrequency driven electrodeless mercury low pres-sure lamp is used as UV light source. It generates a 253.7 nm emission line of an extremely narrowbandwidth which is congruent with the absorp-tion line of the Hg atoms measured. The referencebeam method is applied to get an exceedinglyhigh stability of the UV source. The mercury con-centration is measured in an optical cell which has been made entirely offused silica (Suprasil). Thanks to the sensitivityenhancement provided bythe GoldTrap there is noneed for a long path cellwhich always has a greatersurface effect. Recent solidstate UV detectors with subsequent digital signalprocessing are used forabsorption measurement.SamplingIt is essential that the trap is free of mercury befo-re sampling. This is ensured by a cleaning stepwhich is automatically performed. To keep particles out of the system and to protectthe trap from passivation,a filter is installedupstream the sample inlet. The filter is made oflow-interactive material;the filter membrane hasa porosity of 0.45 µm and is made of PTFE.Thecomplete filter unit is easily replaceable.Sample Flow ControlThe sample flow is measured with a high precisionelectronic mass flow meter. The flow rate integra-ted over time gives the total sample volume. Theflow is automatically changed to a lower valueduring the desorption step to achieve maximumsensitivity.MERCURY INSTRUMENTS á ANALYTICAL TECHNOLOGIESCalibration There are two methods to check and calibrate theinstrument:One way is to capture mercury on the GoldTrap bybubbling air through a liquid mercury standard towhich stannous chloride solution has been added.Another quick, accurate, and precise way is thestatic calibration with mercury saturated air.Gaseous mercury is injected directly onto theGoldTrap. In this case the built-in calibration portis used which is internally connected to the sam-ple gas line leading into the GoldTrap. The calibra-tion port is equipped with a septum throughwhich gaseous mercury is injected with a syringe. The type of syringe used for this purpose is speci-ally designed to measure and dispense gases.Themercury is then automatically drawn onto theGoldTrap. Calibration gas sources are available asaccessories. The calibration check procedure canbe automatized as an option.Display and Output ofMeasurementsThe results of the measurements are displayed ona graphic LCD as a bargraph and numerically. It ispossible to view past readings with a paging function. Calibrations are stored in a non-volatilememory. The device has a serial interface for datatransfer to a PC and a 0-20 mA output.UT-3000: Peak during thermal desorption of Hg from GoldTrap.Advantages of the AADetection MethodThe latest AA detection technique used in the UT-3000 offers some clear advantages over othermethods.Mercury trace detection by fluorescencemust use a carrier and sometimes a sheath gasand suffers from the quenching effect which cannever be completely eliminated. The UT-3000 requires no expensive gases for ope-ration and there are no negative interferencescaused by the quenching effect.Sensitivity and detection limits are far superior tothose instruments based on measurement of elec-trical resistivity of a thin gold film.UT-3000: Graphic display of measurements.Case study mercury in laboratory air. The data show an increase of Hg during shutdown of room ventilation system. How does the UT-3000 work? The Mercury Instruments GoldTrap is used tocapture total gaseous mercury (TGM) directlyfrom the atmosphere. GoldTraps work becausemercury sticks to gold at room temperature. Agas carrying gaseous mercury is pulled throughthe trap; the gas continues to flow through thetrap but the mercury stays behind--trapped onthe gold. After the mercury is captured, theGoldTrap is heated very quickly; this releasesthe mercury as a gas (thermal desorption).Thegaseous mercury is then swept by the flow ofpurified mercury free air into the optical cell ofthe detector. Here the mercury is measured byatomic absorption spectrometry.Mercury Ultratracer 3000 Technical SpecificationsMeasuring principle: Preconcentration of mercury onto gold trap and subsequentrelease by fast heating, detection by AAMercury collector: Proprietary MI GoldTrapDetector: Advanced AA photometer with stabilized electrodeless mercury discharge lamp, wavelength = 253,7 nmSample volume: 0.1 l to 100 lSampling duration: 10 seconds to 15 minutes Measurement cycle time: 10 seconds to 16 minDetection limit: <0.1 ng/m3 corresponding to 0.5 pg Hg absolutelyMeasuring range: at 10 l sample volume: 0.1 ng/m3 to 2000 ng/m3at 1 l sample volume: 1 ng/m3 to 10000 ng/m3Sample volume Electronic massflow meterdetermination:Sample pump: Membrane pump, VitonSample inlet: 0.45 µm PTFE membrane filter, disposableCalibration port: PTFE coated silicone rubber septumCarrier gas: Not requiredData display: Display of realtime signal reading during gold trap heating period, display of measurement results in a barcode diagramData logger function: Built-in data logger for record of 10000 measurements (up to 100 days)Data output: Via RS232 to a computer (PC or Laptop)Calibration: Through calibration gas injection port, manually using calibration gas source and syringe (optionally available), automatic with calibration source (option) Power supply: 110 V or 230 V 50/60 HzPower consumption: Max. 125 W (heating peak)Dimensions: 45 x 15 x 35 cm (W x H x D)Weight: Approx. 9 kgTemperature range: 5¡C to 35¡CAccessories: Calibration set for static calibrationAutomatic calibration deviceMC-3000 Dynamic Calibration Gas GeneratorCarrying case with handle and wheelsMains independent power supply packMercury Instruments GmbHAnalytical TechnologiesLiebigstra§e 11bD-85757 KarlsfeldTel.:+49 (0)8131 - 50 57 20Fax: +49 (0)8131 - 50 57 22mail@mercury-instruments.deThe Response to an Analytical Challenge:Mercury Instruments.Q u a nt i t at i ve t ra ce analysis of merc u ry has been a challenging task for the analyst until now.
