A cesium-137 or cobalt-60 isotope is used as the source of gamma radiation that is passed as a collimated beam through the process vessel and material toward the detector.Detector InferenceAs the process level rises, it shields the detector from the radiation. The more radiation the detector receives, the lower the process density and vice versa. The NaI crystal on the opposite side of the tank infers the density based on the radiation received. For the toughest applications, radiation-based measurement is the only solution. It is non-contact and is not affected by process pressure, temperature, or corrosive properties. Even in the toughest environment, radiation-based measurement is accurate and highly reliable .Why Use Radiation-based Measurement? The MiniTrac offers product and performance features that were once considered unattainable under these extreme process requirements. In turn, the radiation that passes through the process vessel does not affect the measured material. All systems are mounted external to the vessel and do not require process downtime for installation. The measuring principle is independent of viscosity, conductivity, and chemical properties of the medium. Temperature influences are compensated electronically.7 Radiation-based Density in the plics SystemCertificationsRadiation-based density instrumentation is designed for certification compliance with the following programs:TerminalsElectronicsHousingsSensorsIndicating & Adjustment Module4 … 20 mA/ HARTProfibus PA FoundationFieldbusPLICSCOM VEGACONNECT DTMplics AdvantagesAs the world's first modular measurement system, plics provides these benefits to VEGA customers: ? Local display and adjustment module with the PLICSCOM ? PC connection through the VEGACONNECT ? Echo curve recording through plics electronics ? INMETRO (Brazil) ? NEPSI (China)8DensityApplication AreasThe MiniTrac measures the density, or mass per unit volume, of liquids and slurries contained in pipes or process vessels. The MiniTrac’s non-contact, radiation-based measurement principle is unaffected by product viscosity or other properties. The density measurement allows the operator to monitor percent solids in a slurry, or track an interface level within the process, making the MiniTrac an ideal detector in many industries.Slurry FlowTo ensure that a process is running at optimum capacity, mining facilities require accurate tracking of percent solids in their slurry pipelines. A MiniTrac reliably monitors the amount of radiation seen from its paired source holder, and translates that into a percent solids output. ? Density detector continuously reports percent solids measurement ? Lightweight detector system reduces mounting requirementsFlue Gas ScrubberAccurate tracking of the lime slurry pipeline in a fossil fuel power plant’s scrubber system is imperative to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. The MiniTrac 31 tracks the density of the lime slurry in the pipeline to maintain the efficiency of the scrubbing process. ? No moving parts vastly reduces maintenance requirements ? Reliable density measurement is produced, even under extreme process conditions9MudloggingMudlogging is a critical part of the drilling process, requiring precise monitoring of the mud pits because confirmed availability means not only cost-effective drilling, but safe drilling as well. The MiniTrac 31 density detector measures the mud during this process, ensuring reliable monitoring of operations so that personnel can focus on safety. ? External mounting ensures an unhindered mud flow ? Density detector continuously reports percent solids measurement ? Lightweight detector system reduces mounting requirementsRemote MonitoringMany applications require the mounting of level or density detectors in areas that are difficult to access. A VEGADIS 61 provides remote measured value indication and adjustment of MiniTrac 31 detectors at a distance of up to 82 feet (25 meters) from the mounted detector’s location. The cable connection carries communication and power directly from the MiniTrac 31 to the VEGADIS 61. ? VEGADIS 61 remote display requires no additional power ? Remote adjustment and diagnostic procedures occur at ground level or a safely accessed location“The experience and knowledge from 60 years of practical application are embedded in ProTrac. This means high operational reliability, accurate measuring results, and long-term process continuity.”1086Setup and AdjustmentInstrument Indication and Adjustment ? PLICSCOM off ers local measured value indication and adjustment ? All sensor data may be saved on the PLICSCOM and copied into a new sensor ? Sensors are easily configurable and important adjustments are done quickly with DTMs ? EDD descriptions are available for all plics devices Guided Setup Configuring the detector in the proper way is perhaps the most important step in commissioning a new device. It is important that the technician easily understand the parameter settings and what effect they have on the output of the instrument. VEGA recognizes that this is not only important to running a profitable operation, but to having a safe work environment as well. Radiation-based measurements infer process conditions, rather than measure them directly. Accuracy requires careful setup. VEGA provides guided setup in our DTM adjustment tool. From simple density to complicated mass flow measurements, ProTrac has an intuitive step-by-step guided setup wizard to assure accurate results. In addition, setup may be accomplished using a local PLICSCOM interface or remotely using a HART EDD.On-screen information makes it easy to understand the purpose of each step. Thanks to the guided setup, users can count on a safe and reliable measurement.117Services for the Complete Product LifecycleTraining VEGA Americas offers a variety of training services to meet customer needs.
