Oil and Gas - Acoustic Design & Validation

ACOUSTIC DESIGN & VALIDATION OF OIL & GAS FACILITIES Vibratec has participated in the design of numerous facilities and has performed surveys and diagnoses on many platforms and FPSO, as well as LNG plants, refineries and gas compression sites. Vibratec has developed its own measurement tools and software to handle these issues. Worker Noise Exposure on Offshore Facilities Comfort in Living Quarters Noise Diagnosis Cabin noise measurement Living quarter model The noise inside the living quarters and the working rooms is of utmost importance for the workers. Vibratec has proven experience in design assistance for these facilities, working in close cooperation with the engineering. From FEED to EPC, Vibratec is the best partner to ensure the comfort inside rooms. Two main issues have to be treated: Computed FPSO noise map •Air-borne noise, corresponding to noise transmited through the air. The solution is to insulate the sources, treat the transfer path(s) adequately and optimize equipment placement. •Structure-borne noise, which is due to the vibrations transmistted though the structure and radiated by the floors and walls. It can be reduced by insulating the vibrating equipment, identifying the transfer paths and improving room insulation. Vibratec has the experience and state of the art tools to identify noise sources: - Incorrectly insulated or poorly designed equipment, - Insufficiently treated walls and floors that may present defaults (acoustic leaks, resonances…), - Improper uncoupling of pipes & vibrating equipment, which influences noise and vibration transfer paths. Offshore facilities are always noisy due to the equipment density and the process that requires pumps, generators, compressors… It is important to correctly assess the levels, define critical areas and validate the PAGA system. During platform or FPSO design phases, Vibratec collaborates with the EPC and the equipment suppliers. Acoustic models are developed and updated from FEED to commissioning through the EPC and FAT stages. Vibratec also performs experimental noise mapping on operating facilities. Results are used to tune theoretical maps and can be followed by diagnosis to define mitigation actions. Offshore noise measurement Technical Expertise Oil & Gas Validation during Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) Equipment noise levels are validated regarding project specifications thanks to sound pressure and intensity measurements used to estimate sound power levels, performed during Full Load/Full Speed string tests. Computation notes Acoustic levels around the package are computed and recommendations are given by our engineers regarding the design of sound attenuation devices (ie enclosures, mufflers, barriers,…). Reference level / Background noise The noise levels are measured on-site before any equipment is installed. The reference points that are selected are the fence (site boundary), the closest inhabited areas and the existing buildings. 2. Noise simulation and design assistance A model of the new facilities is built. The sources are modeled using data from suppliers or from our database. The most contributing sources taken into account are usually the rotating equipment, fans, boilers, pipes, valves, flares… Passive installations are also included in the model, such as buildings, walls, scrubbers… The goal is to anticipate excessive noise levels and propose mitigation action. The model is updated throughout the project and is finalized at the commissioning stage. 3. Commissioning Noise levels are measured on the new site once all the equipment is installed and operating. The levels are compared to the reference levels (step 1). The emergences and the absolute levels must be characterized in both day and night conditions.
