NOISE & VIBRATION STUDIES ON PLATFORMS, FPSO & FLNG Vibratec has been providing noise & vibration design assistance on offshore facilities since 1986. With a skilled engineering team and approved practices, Vibratec can handle any project’s noise & vibration studies, from well head, drilling and production platforms to the largest FPSO &FLNG. Air-borne Noise The noise transmitted from an installation to a receiving area can be controlled and reduced by: • Insulating the noise source and improving the machine design, • Treating the transmission path adequately, • Organising and optimizing the installation. Example of Noise levels in an FPSO LQ Noise Studies: Air-borne & Structure-borne Noise Control Excessive noise on offshore installations generates discomfort in cabins and control rooms, difficulty concentrating or communicating in work areas and can become a health issue for workers. Structure-Borne Noise The noise radiated in the living quarters (LQ) or work rooms is also due to the vibrations transmitted through the structure and radiated by floors and walls. Vibratec can predict this structure-borne noise and reduce it by working at several levels: • Insulation of the vibrating equipment, • Design of the machine supporting floor, • Identification and action on the transfer paths, • Acoustic treatment of the rooms. Noise map of a FPSO Topside Integrated Project Expertise The aim is to ensure installation reliability and to control human exposure to noise and vibrations. Vibratec’s success comes from the cooperation of its experts with Mechanical, Structural and HSE teams all along the project. It starts at the FEED by identifying critical issues and defining control strategy based on Vibratec experience on many offshore facilities. As a third party during the EPC, Vibratec participates in every step, from the early design to the commissioning. Technical Expertise Oil & Gas Expertise Vibratec experts can improve the main framing design and machine fixation in order to avoid resonances at the early design stage. This work is based on: • An internal database containing a wide range of computed & measured structures and machines, • A team of senior engineers involved in design and troubleshooting on many offshore facilities. The most efficient way to handle this early expertise work is to meet the mechanical and structural teams before the main members are ordered. Vibration Studies Finite element analysis This analysis is particularly useful in three areas: • Vibrating equipment base-plate design: the goal is to avoid both global (flexion and torsion) and local resonances (component rocking), • Supporting deck design: attention is paid to local bending modes that can induce high vibration levels and be critical in control or working areas. • Piping support design: sensitive pipes (usually connected to reciprocating equipment and high pressure compressors) require specific finite element analysis. Compressor base plate modal analysis Validation Validation is finalized during the Factory Acceptance Test (at supplier test bench) and commissioning (on the yard or offshore). Vibratec has resources and experience to perform noise & vibration measurements during these tests.
