Suitablesupports for piping shall be providedwhere required.Insulation of Carrier Piping &Valves:The insulation shall be mineral wool orcalcium silicate in accordance withmanufacturers’ recommendations.Thickness for each pipe size shall beequal to that used in the adjacent con-duit. Insulation shall be covered with a.016” thick metal jacket, fastened atmaximum 18” centers with 32 gaugestainless steel strap conforming toASTM A-167, type 304.Manhole Shell:The body of the manhole shall be 1/4”minimum thick black steel plate con-forming to ASTM A-36. The top andbottom plate shall be 1/2” minimumthick black steel plate conforming toASTM A-36. The top or bottom plateshall be 4” larger in diameter than thebody. Structural steel I-beams or chan-nels, conforming to ASTM A-36, shallbe welded to the top and bottom plateas required. Lifting eyes shall beattached to the top plate as required.Sump Pit:A 12” diameter sump pit shall be locat-ed in every manhole. The pit shall be aminimum of 12” deep. The sump shallbe constructed with 3/8” minimum steelplate conforming to ASTM A-36.Stub Outs:Stub outs shall be located on the man-hole at elevations and locations asrequired. These stub outs shall have thesame carrier pipe, insulation and con-duit/jacket and shall be made to fit withadjoining section of the conduit system.Air Vents:Each manhole shall have two air ventsfor ventilation. They shall protrudethrough, and will be welded to, the topplate. One shall extend to 12” abovethe bottom plate and the other shall ter-minate 3” below the top plate. Thevents shall extend at least 6” abovegrade or as specified in the contractdocuments. A 180 degree elbow(gooseneck) shall be provided witheach vent line. The vent lines shall beconstructed of 6” 10 gauge epoxycoated steel pipe.Manhole Access:Access to the manhole shall be provid-ed by a 30” diameter, 1/4” minimumwall thickness steel tube conforming toASTM A-139, which shall be welded tothe top plate. The access tube shallextend a minimum of 6” above grade,or as specified in the contract docu-ments. An air tight cover shall be pro-vided on the top of the access tube. This cover is sealed with a ring gasketand 16 equally spaced bolts conform-ing to ASTM A-307. The cover ismade of 8 gauge minimum steel andhas an O.D. of 36-3/4”. The ring gasketshall be suitable for temperatures up to212° F.Ladder:A ladder for entry shall extend throughthe access tube down through themanhole body to the floor. The laddershall have non-slip surfaces and shallbe constructed of 2” by 3/8” steeluprights conforming to ASTM A-36 and1/2” steel bars for steps.Valves and Internal Components:Valves and internal components shallbe provided as described in the con-tract documents.Protective CoatingsThe exterior surfaces of the manholeshall have a factory applied coating:minimum 60 mils. The interior of themanhole and all internal components, excluding the jacket/insulated pipes andaccessories, shall be coated with 10mils minimum of a high temperaturecoating.InstallationThe manholes shall be installed at thelocations shown on plans. A monolith-ic concrete anchor block shall bepoured by the installing contractor, soas to provide adequate keying and shallbe of sufficient size to prevent manholeflotation.Optional cathodic protection suppliedby Rovanco.Manhole_Brochure.qxd 1/21/11 11:01 AM Page 1Rovanco’s Pre-FabricatedManholes are:• Totally welded steel• Factory pressure tested• Leak Proof• Factory coated• 50-year cathodic protection systemThey create a dry ventilatedenvironment for your:• Valves• Steam traps• Expansion jointsThey reduce the construction costs because they are:• Pre-Fabricated• Pre-Piped• Pre-InsulatedRovanco pre-fabricated steel manholes can play an important role in your underground heat distribution system.Rovanco Pre-Fabricated Manholes can be installed in one dayAllow you to accelerate the placement of manholes to get str eets open in three days or less. • One day to excavate and set the manhole• One day to hook up the pipes entering and leaving the manhole• One day to touch-up coating, apply anodes and backfill. The average construction time for field built concr ete manholes is 2-3 weeksplus time to pipe and finish the inside.
