Profile Extrusions Brochure

GAR-DUR®UHMWProfile ExtrusionsGAR-DUR®UHMW Polyethylene profile extrusions aremade from ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) poly-ethylene having a molecular weight of 4.2million orgreater. Beginning in the 1950’s, Garland Manufactur-ingCompany pioneered theNorthAmericanmarket for,and continues to specialize in this true UHMWpolymer. Its ability to resist abrasion and corrosion while deliv-ering a low-friction, high-impact surface have madeGAR-DUR®UHMW the logical, cost-effective choice fora wide range of industrial applications. For decades,Garland’s stock shapes and custom-extruded UHMWprofile extrusions have aided thousands of industrialcompanies by replacing metal or other less effectivematerials, improving performance, reducing operatingcosts, by eliminating lubrication andminimizing costlydowntime.APPLICATIONSGAR-DUR®UHMW profile extrusions are presentlyused in the material handling industry, in componentson conveyor lines, in the automotive industry, mining, lumbering, food/beverage packaging, as well as manyother industries which require a tough, wear-resistantmaterial. GAR-DUR®UHMW extrusions have beenused successfully for many years in drive and suspen-sion systems under the most demanding conditions. For a material to withstand the grueling operation ofhandling friction in grit and sub-zero temperatures, itmust truly be tough.ADVANTAGESGAR-DUR® UHMW fights abrasion and corrosionwhile contributing a very low coefficient of friction toany application. It is only 1/7 the weight of steel, 1/3the weight of aluminum, and it outwears abrasion-re-sistant steel 3 to 1. UHMW’s coefficient of friction is0.14 or lower, and it typically does not require lubrica-tion. Durable GAR-DUR®UHMW profile extrusionsare manufactured using specially-designed equipmentwith precision- engineered extrusion dies.STOCK SHAPESGAR-DUR®UHMW is the industry leader in extrudedstock shapes. In addition to custom-made parts, manystock shapes—boards, bars, angles, rod, tube and sheetare available, in a variety of sizes. We carry UHMWrod to 8” diameter, and we stock boards and bars inlengths up to 50’. Extruded lengths can be cut intoshorter lengths and fabricated into custom parts such aswear parts, bearing blocks, sleeved bearings, as well asthousands of other wear- and impact-resistant products.CUSTOM SHAPESGAR-DUR®UHMW extruded shapes can be custom-made to your specifications. They can be fabricatedinto parts for the aerospace and robotics industries, wastewater treatment plants, conveyor operations, andthousands of other applications. Custom profileextrusions are constantly being developed to meet thespecific needs of Garland’s customers. To save costs, prototype profiles are engineered for testing purposesbefore a proprietary extrusion die is built for produc-tion. Virtually any extruded or machined part can becustom produced.COMPARISONSThe charts on the back of this sheet show some of therelative advantages of GAR-DUR®UHMWextrusions.For more information contact:GARLANDMFG. Test samplesare spun for a total of 7hours at 1,750 rpm in awater-sand mixture.GAR-DUR® UHMWplastic was assigned anabrasion rating of 10;results for the othermaterials tested areshown in relation tothis baseline.Even though GAR-DUR® UHMW is exceptionallydurable, it works very well with other materials. GAR-DUR®UHMW can significantly increase the wear lifeof in-contact moving surfaces, out-wearing steel threeto one in most wear applications.Material RelativeAbrasion IndexGAR-DUR®UHMW Plastic 10Nylon 6-6 24Polyurethane (D-70) 27TFE 72HDPE 80304 Stainless Steel 84Polycarbonate 96Carbon Steel 100Polyacetal 110Aluminum 120Phosphor Bronze 190Phenolic Laminate L.E. 200Yellow Brass 400Hard Neoprene Rubber 800Hickory Wood 950Material Used Relative Coefficientof Sliding FrictionSteel to Steel 0.30-0.40GAR-DUR® UHMW to Rolled Steel 0.14GAR-DUR® UHMW to Stainless Steel 0.14Urethane to Steel 0.70Nylon to Steel 0.20Teflon to Steel 0.11Acetal to Steel 0.20RELATIVE COEFFICIENTOF SLIDING FRICTIONThis chart compares various materials toGAR-DUR®UHMW. GAR-DUR® does nottypically require lubrication, so maintenanceis easier, quicker, and less costly. Its ex-tremely low coefficient of friction makesequipment operations much smoother. It canreplace steel parts, and makes an excellentbearing material, reducing friction and drag,as well as wear and abrasion.
