ISO
14855
specifies
a
method
for
determining
the
ultimate
aerobic
biodegradability
of
plastic
materials
under
controlled
composting
conditions
by
gravimetric
measurement
of
the
amount
of
carbon
dioxide
evolved.
The
method
is
designed
to
yield
an
optimum
rate
of
biodegradation
by
adjusting
the
humidity,
aeration
and
temperature
of
the
composting
vessel.
The
method
applies
to
the
following
materials:
• Natural
and/or
synthetic
polymers
and
copolymers,
and
mixtures
of
these;
• Plastic
materials
that
contain
additives
such
as
plasticizers
or
colorants;
• Water--soluble
polymers;
• Materials
that,
under
the
test
conditions,
do
not
inhibit
the
activity
of
micro--organisms
present
in
the
inoculum.
Echo
Instruments
respirometer
system
is
designed
to
yield
the
optimum
conditions
for
biodegradation
of
a
plastic
material
in
compost
by
precise
control:
aeration
flow,
humidity,
pressure
and
temperature
in
the
composting
vessel.
It
also
aims
to
determine
the
ultimate
biodegradability
of
the
test
material
by
using
a
small--scale
reactors
with
multi--channel
gas
sampler.
The
degradation
rate
is
measured
by
determining
the
mass
of
the
evolved
carbon
dioxide
using
infrared
dual
channel
optical
sensor.
Advantages
of
automatic
measurements
in
comparison
to
gravimetric
method
Traditional
gravimetric
technique
can
be
time
consuming.
The
main
advantage
of
an
automatic
on--line
measurement
is
continuous
monitoring
of
parameters
in
the
reaction
vessel.
Working
conditions
are
continuously
checked.
The
main
priority
is
to
check
the
tightness
of
the
system,
which
significantly
decrease
probable
troubleshooting.

Automatic
Humidification
One
of
the
main
advantages
of
ECHO
Respirometer
System
is
that
the
samples
are
automatically
adequately
and
constantly
humidified.
The
system
provides
the
constant
humidification
of
samples
by
returning
the
condensate
water
into
reaction
vessel.
Because
of
less
water
refilling
need,
the
necessary
manipulation
of
samples
is
drastically
reduced.
