SETAC Africa 6th Conference 2013 - Brochure
1st Announcement 6th SETAC Africa Conference 02.-05.09.2013, Lusaka, Zambia Background The continued growth pattern of global production, trade and use of chemicals exerts an increasing chemicals management burden on the developing countries and those with economies in transition that have the least capacities to deal with such complex challenges. By 2020, developing countries are ex-pected to lead the world in growth rate for high volume industrial chemicals, increasing their share of world chemicals production to 31 %. Chemical consumption in developing countries is likewise growing much faster than in developed countries and could account for a third of global consumption by 2020. Regulations, monitoring and sustainable use of chemicals is an issue that needs urgent attention in these countries not to endanger ecosystems, environmental resources, and the livelihoods and health of future generations. This conference should contribute to discussions and networking amongst different stakeholders (academia, government and industry) and should create scientific solutions . Information on Lusaka and Conference venue The conference will be held from 02-05.09.2013 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lusaka, Zambia. Lusaka, Zambia Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia, is one of the fastest growing cities in southern Africa sitting at about 1, 300 m above sea level. It is the home of nearly 2 million inhabitants, a centre of both commerce and governance. One of the reasons for choosing the position of Lusaka is its central location in Zambia forming a hub linking various parts of the country. There are also air links to most tourist destinations (including the famous Victoria Falls) from Lusaka. The second reason is that Lusaka has a pleasant climate. Lusaka offers a wide range of accommodation facilities that take care of all tastes and budgets. From five-star well known hotel chains to lodges, motels and quite guesthouses in the suburbs. The Intercontinental Lusaka is situated in the diplomatic and government area of Lu-saka. It is within well-located to access many tourist attractions and the business centre of the city. It hosts Lusaka’s leading restaurants, multiple cafés, bars, meeting rooms with modern audio-visual equipment and high speed internet.
