The Swan Hills Treatment Centre is a fully integrated world-class hazardous waste treatment facility. It is the only one of its kind in Canada and one of the few in the world. Since its commencement of service in 1987, the plant continues to play a principal role in treating hazardous wastes from across Canada and North America. The Centre accepts PCBs, dioxins, furans and other hazardous wastes with the exception of pathological, explosive, mercury and radio active wastes. The Centre is operated by Earth Tech (Canada), a global engineering and contracting fi rm which provides a variety of services to meet environmental and infrastructure needs for industry and government. Located 240 kilometres (180 miles) northwest of Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city, the Swan Hills Treatment Centre is directly north of the State of Montana. It is situated approximately 12 kilometres (eight miles) from the town of Swan Hills (population approximately 1,500). The Swan Hills Treatment Centre was the fi rst voluntarily sited hazardous waste treatment facility in North America. Through an extensive public consultation process and community referendums the facility received the support of the Town of Swan Hills and the surrounding area. The Centre has been sited in this region of Alberta because of the area’s favorable geologic formations. Occupying a half section (320 acres) of land, the physical equipment and facilities on site include a stabilization plant, a physical/chemical processing/neutralization facility, one rotary kiln incinerator, a deep-well for disposal of inert liquids and a Class One landfi ll for disposal of treated residues. In addition to treatment facilities, the site has a variety of storage facilities to store bulk solids, bulk liquids, drums (able to accommodate 17,000 drums) lab packs and other bulk materials. These storage facilities are located in heated and unheated buildings, tank farms and other facilities used for the storage of hazardous waste compounds awaiting treatment.Swan Hills Treatment CentreOperated by:OverviewAerial view of Swan Hills Treatment Centre.Swan Hills Treatment CentreP.O.
