Soap Separator - Technical Paper

SoapSeparator A.H. LUNDBERG ASSOCIATES, INC.Soap skimmings collected from the kraft pulp mill evaporation and brown stock washing systems often contain significant quantities of black liquor. To avoid chemical loss to the pulp mill and excess chemical usage at the tall oil plant, the entrained black liquor must be separated from the soap. Some of the black liquor will drain out by gravity. However, facili tating the liquor drainage will improve the soap yield and soap quality. The Lundberg Associates’ Soap Separator mechanically performs this task. For mills with tall oil acidu lation plants, the liquor reduction provides significant caustic savings and brine reduction. • Improves soap acid number • Reduced shipping costs when the soap is processed off site • Reduced soda and sulfur loss • Reduced chemical use and lignin heal at the tall oil plant • Skimmer arms provide positive soap removal • Lower liquor content in the soap for equivalent storage • Can be installed in a new or existing tank • Proven in operation for over 25 years • Savings realized in excess of $500,000 per year for a 1,000 TPD mill The illustration at the right shows the Soap Separator as it would be installed in a tank.
