Soil Sampling in `Inaccessible` Areas Brochure

Soil Sampling in“Inaccessible” AreasSOIL SAMPLINGUNDER INFRASTRUCTURESite investigation at active facilities canbe difficult to impossible using traditionalsoil sampling techniques. Potentialcontamination source areas are oftenunder infrastructure (i.e., above or belowground storage tanks) and inaccessible.Directed Technologies Drillinghas developed soil sampling equipmentand technniques for use with directionaldrilling rigs that allow for soil samplecollection from beneath site structures.DIRECTIONAL DRILLING& SOIL SAMPLINGWhile the process is time consuming and canbe difficult, it allows samples to be collectedfrom locations it was previously impossible toreach. The idea is simple, advance a boreholeto the proposed soil sampling location usingDirected Technologies Drilling has the expertise andtechnology to make site investigation and soil samplingat previously inaccessible locations a reality.Lateral ThinkingYields Better SolutionsDirected Technologies Drilling, Inc.(DTD) is a leader in horizontaldirectional drilling (HDD) technology. Our objective is complete clientsatisfaction. We apply experience andinnovative thinking to provide qualityservice that is unrivaled in the industry.DTD has the most experienced teamof professionals in the business.James Doesburg, President, is arecognized authority on HDD andpioneered many of its innovationsand environmental applications.Principals and project managers haveacademic degrees in geology orhydrogeology and are recognizedauthorities in the field by groupsincluding the Colorado Center forEnvironmental Management, theUniversity of Wisconsin and theNational Ground Water Association.DTD has offices in Washington stateand Pennsylvania and has completedprojects in 29 U.S. states, Mexico,Europe and Japan.Coupling technical experience with anunblemished safety record and a teamof HAZWOPER trained employees,DTD is the clear choice for yourdirectional environmental drilling needs.Directed Technologies Drilling, Inc.8626 South 228th StreetKent, WA 98031800.239.5950info@horizontaldrill.comhorizontaldrill.comSAMPLING UNDER TANKS, BUILDINGS AND ROADSdirectional drilling. Remove the drill bitfrom the bore, attach the soil samplingdevice and advance it into the borehole withthe drill rig. The sampler is driven all theway to the proposed sampling location in aclosed position, preventing any soil or debrisfrom entering the sampler. Once at thetargeted location, the sampler ismechanically opened and locked intoposition; this locking allows it to be driven orrotated into the undisturbed soils at thesample location. Once the sample is taken, the drill rods and sampler are retrieved fromthe borehole, sampler removed and drill bitplaced back onto the drill rods. The drill bitis driven back into the borehole, and drillingprogresses to the next sample location.ABOUT THE SAMPLESThe soil samples collectedusing these techniquesare 12 inches in length andslightly less than 2 inchesin diameter. DirectedTechnologies Drillinghas successfully sampled in fineto medium grained cohesive soils. The application may be limited by very lowor very high cohesive strength soils, but modification to the sampling techniquemay allow sampling in a wider varietyof settings.SAMPLING UNDER TANKS, BUILDINGS AND ROADSDTD’s Commitment to Health & SafetyAt Directed Technologies Drilling, Inc.safe completion of every project is of utmostimportance. Our field teams are small, efficientand highly experienced by design. All of ouremployees have completed the OccupationalSafety and Health Administration’s (OSHA)40-hour HAZWOPER training (1910.120)and have up-to-date 8-hour refresher training.DTD’s safety record is remarkable. With an unblemished safety recordand no lost time injuries, our crews are the best and safest availablein the horizontal environmental drilling business.CONTACT US TO LEARN MOREPlease contact us to discuss your sitespecific conditions and determine whetheror not soil sampling with directional drillingequipment may work for you.Contact us at 800.239.5950 orinfo@horizontaldrill.com.Directed Technologies Drilling, Inc.800.239.5950 :: info@horizontaldrill.com :: horizontaldrill.comHAZWOPERT r a i n e d
