Sorbster® Media is a functionalized, enriched alumina media that covalently bonds soluble metals and other trace contaminants to its active sites. Sorbster® Media is used to remove contaminants in wastewater from a wide variety of applications including temporary remediation and long-term treatment solutions.

Adsorption is the adhesion of an extremely thin layer of molecules to the surfaces of solid bodies with which they are in contact. There are two types of adsorption, Physical and Chemical. Both are used to remove contaminants from water.

In physical adsorption such as activated carbon or reverse osmosis the process is indiscriminate and any molecule small enough will bond to the porous surface of the media. This makes the process costly and requires high volumes of media as benign particles will take up space. This is a non-permanent bond.

In chemical adsorption (chemisorption), Sorbster’s process, specific molecules can be targeted by changing the adsorbent material. This increases the efficiency of removing the unwanted particles and reduces the volume of media used. This is a permanent bond.

While physical adsorption is very common within water treatment, chemisorption is quite rare and is part of what sets us apart from other treatment options.
