Spill Clean-up ProceduresSpillFix Universal Organic AbsorbentThese spill clean-up procedures are provided in the absence of, however definitely do not replace, any currentworkplace procedures and policies.Fast acting SpillFix Organic Absorbent must be applied in conjunction with the proper Spill Response equipment andPersonal Protection Equipment (PPE). Only individuals with formal spill contents identification and clean-up training arequalified to determine the correct PPE and other spill response equipment. Do not attempt to clean-up any spill unless youcan identify it and are trained in the right clean-up Safe Work Procedures. The workplace should contain a designated areawith Safety Equipment.Common Spills:SpillFix treats many commonly used to absorb non-aggressive oils and water-based liquids such as fuels, oils and lubricants(animal, mineral vegetable or synthetic), hydraulic oils, cutting fluids and coolants. Can be used on inland and marine oilspills. SpillFix is suitable for mild chemical concentrates, cleaning concentrates, pesticides and herbicide spills.Disposal:Always dispose of in accordance with workplace, local, state, and federal regulations. SpillFix meets EPA leachatestandards for hydrocarbons (C10 - C36).Caution:DO NOT USE this SpillFix on highly concentrated and volatile corrosives (acids and alkalies), volatile solvents, formaldehyde,and hazardous organic waste.Spill Procedures:When encountering a spill you must first determine:1. What is the contaminant?2. Can I enter the area?3. Can I safely accomplish a useful purpose?4. Do I have the necessary product information (i.e. MSDS)?5. Do I have the required safety equipment and knowledge of appropriate procedures?The following steps outline an appropriate and efficient approach to a spill.Step 1 - Get Awayif a hazardous spill is discovered employees should move a safe distance away. Turn off ignition sources and equipment ifpossible.Step 2 - Identify what you sawAccurately describe what you have just seen. What was it? Was it a solid, liquid or gas? Where was it? Was it raining? Didit have a familiar odour?Step 3 - Get HelpFollow company procedures. Notify the key contact immediately and report the details of the spill.Step 4 - Hazard assessmentDetermine the hazards by obtaining the Material Safety Data Sheets, read labels, identifying signs or Transportation ofDangerous Goods placards. If this becomes necessary responders should assume the worst and use the highest level ofpersonal protection equipment.Step 5 - Alert others and evacuate unnecessary personnelStep 6 - Secure the area and establish spill boundaryStep 7 - Prepare a plan of actionsuch as wind direction, potential for rain, what might happen on site. Prepare for emergency vehicle access.Step 8 - Secure proper equipment and materialsEstablish levels of personal protection equipment required by determining potential hazards. Choose equipment such asspark proof tools if flammable liquids are involved.Step 9 - Establish decontamination and first aid stationsEstablish decontamination procedures in the event that someone is injured. Arrange for medical assistance and support ifnecessary. Material Safety Data sheets will provide health and medical data for the hazardous material.Step 10 - Contain the spillThe goal is to limit the spread of contaminant and thus maximize safety and minimize liability costs.Step 11 - Clean up the spillThe goal here is to limit the spread of contamination, remove contaminant from protective clothing before removal, and cleanequipment. Absorbents used to clean up the spill are often classified as hazardous waste. Absorbed materials have thesame properties as the spill material. Absorbents must be properly packaged for disposal according to municipal, provincialand federal regulations.Step 12 - Investigate and evaluateThe cause of the accident needs to be investigated and evaluated to prevent further occurrences. Evaluate your plan todetermine if improvements are necessary. Build these improvements into the quarterly spill accident exercises. Replenish allsupplies immediately.
