These documents have been compiled using extensive literature on the fundamentals of hydraulics. Cylinder Designs To provide you with an overview of the many possible applications, the following table provides a brief over-view of the function and design of the hydraulic cylinders. Cylinder Designs Description Symbol Plunger cylinder This single-action cylinder is pressurized only in one direction. Plunger cylinders are also available with an upper limit stop, which returns through its own weight. Application: Presses, construction machi-nes, heavy vehicle construction, and so on. Single-action cylinder According to pressurization of the piston area, this cylinder may be either a pressure or a traction cylinder. The unpressurized piston side has an air filter to prevent dust from penetrating into the cylinder and thus the wear connected with this problem. If a spring has been provided as reset force, the spring pretension must be determined. Single-action telescopic cylinder Telescopic cylinders adapt to limited instal-lation possibilities and, at the same time, fulfill the requirement for the longest stroke possible. All stages of the cylinder are pres-surized on one side and the cylinder re-leases its power during extension. Its own weight on the consumer side makes the cylinder retract. Double-action cylinder (Differential cylinder) These cylinders are the most commonly used hydraulic cylinders. They are also manufactured with damping on the piston or rod side or on both sides. In the case of this model, a force can be transmitted in both directions of movement. They are called differential cylinders becau-se the piston area and the piston rod area differ and the cylinder thus extends slowly and retracts quickly at constant volume. This telescopic cylinder does not return through its own weight and is thus effective in every position. Application: Feed mechanism for large fur-naces and brick kilns. Double-action telescopic cylinder Preface 1|A1 Technical Information Subject to technical changes Version: 01/2010 Hydraulic Cylinder Dimensions When you select a hydraulic cylinder, the determination of the amount of operating pressure is vitally impor-tant. Together with the forces and the stroke speeds required for the task, the operating pressure deter-mines the cylinder sizes and thus the costs. Force and Movement Ratios of a Double-Action Cylinder If an external force F acts on a piston, this force creates a pressure on the piston area Ak. Conversely, this force is also a resistance that the pump delivery Q meets. In this way, a pressure builds that acts evenly on all sides, including the piston area Ak. The piston can thus now exert a force itself according to the following formula: F = p × ArF = p × Ak Analogously for the return 1|A2 Technical Information Feed flow Return flow Stroke h Subject to technical changes Version: 01/2010 F = Piston force in [N] Ak = Piston area in [mm²] Ar = Piston ring area in [mm²] D = Piston diameter in [mm] d = Piston rod diameter in [mm] h = Stroke length in [mm] Q = Pump delivery in [l/min] t = Stroke time in [s] v = Speed in [m/s] Since friction and pressure losses reduce the piston force, a safety margin of 15-25% should be allowed for compensation when you select a cylinder. The theoretical compressive or tractive forces of the hydraulic cylinders can be found in the documents for every series. D 2 × ?4( )D d2 24- × ?1|A3 Technical Information Subject to technical changes Version: 01/2010 Piston Speeds The feed flow or return flow speeds are calculated using the flows of liquid coming from the pump, which fill the stroke volume of the hydraulic cylinder within a certain unit of time. For the speeds specified above, the following equations result under consideration of the usual units: v = Feed flow v = Return flow Please observe that the volume of liquid flowing away during the return flow is always greater than the in-flowing liquid due to the difference in area. As a result, the return flow is faster than the feed flow. If the length of the cylinder stroke is known, the stroke time t can be calculated as follows. t = Feed flow t = Return flow QAkQArA hQk ×A hQr ×1|A4 Technical Information Subject to technical changes Version: 01/2010 Buckling Strength of the Piston Rods The danger of the piston rods buckling during long strokes and an additional unfavorable cylinder mounting determine the cylinder sizes and their limits. The calculations are usually carried out according to Euler since the piston rods are to be seen as slender rods. The following applies: Fk = Fk = Force at which the piston rod buckles in [N] E = Modulus of elasticity in [N/mm2] (Steel 210000 N/mm2) I = Moment of inertia in [mm4] = (for circle cross-section) Lk = Free buckling length in [mm] The following diagram shows the four so-called Eulerian load cases. The permissible stroke lengths of every hydraulic cylinder series are listed in the appendix. ? 22× ×E ILk644 ?×d1|A5 Technical Information Subject to technical changes Version: 01/2010 Basic Formula for the Use of Hydraulic Cylinders Cylinder force F [N] = p [bar] × A [cm²] × 10 A = Effective piston area ________________________________________________________________________ Extension or retraction speed Q = Volume flow ________________________________________________________________________ Required volume flow Q = ________________________________________________________________________ Required pump output = = Pump efficiency ________________________________________________________________________ Acceleration = applies only if a = the constant v2 = End speed v1 = Starting speed ________________________________________________________________________ Acceleration force = m = Accelerated mass ________________________________________________________________________ Kinetic energy = [ ]min/l [ ] 6² ·??????·smvcmA[ ]kWP [ ] [ ] 6001min/··?barplQ???????²sma( )( )[ ]msssmvv122122²²-??????-[ ]NF [ ] ??????·²smakgm[ ]JE [ ] ??????·²²22smvkgm1|A6 [ ][ ] 61²min/·=??????cmAlQsmvTechnical Information Subject to technical changes Version: 01/2010 = (Energy conservation law) End Position Damping: In the case of end position damping, the kinetic energy is converted to heat energy. The piston rod guide is designed to be screwable for maintenance tasks. The piston rod consists of high-tensile structural steel with an approximately 25µm hard chromium-plated layer. Other materials and coat-ings are available on request. The end of the piston rod is guided into the cylinder tube, which minimizes the wear of the piston rod guide and the seal. Please consult us in case of radial forces and non-vertical installation. Technical Data: Max. operating pressure = 250 bar Test pressure = 315 bar Rod Ø = 50-150 mm Temperature range = -20°C - +80°C (of the hydraulic fluid) Stroke Speed = = 0,5 m/s (Standard) Length and stroke tolerances according to DIN7168g (see "Introduction") 3|A1 Connecting Bore The connecting bore is located on the base-side end of the cylinder and can be designed for line breakage and brake valves, whereby the height of the fitting changes (see Table). The piston rod guide is designed to be screwable for maintenance tasks. The piston rod consists of high-tensile structural steel with an approximately 25µm hard chromium-plated layer. Other materials and coat-ings are available on request. Please consult us in case of radial forces and non-vertical installation. Technical Data: max. operating pressure = 210 bar Test pressure = 280 bar Rod Ø = 32-125 mm Temperature range = -20°C - +80°C (of the hydraulic fluid) Pressure fluid = Mineral oil (HL, HLP) according to DIN 51524 and DIN 51525 (standard) Stroke Speed = = 0,5 m/s (Standard) Length and stroke tolerances according to DIN7168g (see "Introduction") Connecting Bore The pipe thread of the connecting bore is designed according to ISO 228/1. The position along the perime-ter can be changed (Standard P7/P8). Vent A vent may be necessary depending on the installation position of the cylinder. The position can be indi-cated along the perimeter if necessary (standard without vent 0/0). Guide In case of long strokes, the supporting width of the piston rod in the cylinder tube can be changed to reduce the load of the guidance system in the fully extended state. The piston rod guide is designed to be screwable for maintenance tasks. The piston rod consists of high-tensile structural steel with an approximately 25µm hard chromium-plated layer. Other materials and coat-ings are available on request. Please consult us in case of radial forces and non-vertical installation. Technical Data: max. operating pressure = 250 bar Test pressure = 315 bar Rod Ø = 25-200 mm Temperature area = -20°C - +80°C (of the hydraulic fluid) Pressure fluid = Mineral oil (HL, HLP) according to DIN 51524 and DIN 51525 (Standard) Stroke speed = = 0,5 m/s (Standard) Length and stroke tolerances according to DIN7168g (see "Introduction") 7|A1 Double-Action Hydraulic Cylinders 250 bar HZD3 Connecting Bore The pipe thread of the connecting bore is designed according to ISO 228/1. The position along the perimeter can be changed (Standard P7/P8). Vent A vent may be necessary depending on the installation position of the cylinder. The position can be indicated along the perimeter if necessary (standard without vent 0/0). Guide In case of long strokes, the supporting width of the piston rod in the cylinder tube can be changed to reduce the load of the guidance system in the fully extended state. This also depends on the type of installation and the cylinder model.
