Sustainability Assessment Services Brochure

The Business Case for Sustainability Assessments If you want to increase your profit margin, reducing waste and improving production efficiency is an easy and powerful way to start. Recognizing these areas for improvement and developing solutions can seem like a daunting task. A Sustainability Assessment performed by Sustainable Solutions Corporation (SSC) will evaluate manufacturing operations, identify sources of waste and provide innovative solutions that generate value. Utilizing years of experience with manufacturers across a wide range of industries, SSC has developed a comprehensive sustainability assessment methodology. Based on the diverse needs of our clients, SSC will customize the scope of the assessment to ensure success. Using a tiered approach, our clients can select the appropriate level of assessment to fit their needs. Each tier can be applied to an entire facility or can be focused on single sections or processes within the operation. The assessment begins with an evaluation of relevant operational data and benchmarking of operations, followed by on-site observation of the processes and equipment. During the on-site evaluation, we focus on identifying the following opportunities to reduce costs and improve performance: ? Energy Conservation Measures ? Material and Energy Flows ? Equipment Improvements ? Waste Heat Recovery Options ? Waste Minimization ? Recycling Opportunities ? Water Reduction ? Alternative Energy Sources ? Additional Relevant Improvements Tier 2 (Detailed Analysis) – After identifying opportunities for improvement and savings, the next step is to perform a detailed technical and economic feasibility analysis of the proposed upgrades. This analysis provides estimated investment cost, return on investment and anticipated environmental benefits. We identify available incentives such as utility rebates, state grants, loans and federal tax incentives and assist with obtaining these incentives to reduce implementation costs. Our clients typically implement the most cost effective operational modifications, and resulting cost savings often fund further improvements. Tier 3 (Implementation) – In preparation for implementation of proposed improvements, SSC will provide engineering and design for the applicable systems including specifications for any required equipment and materials. Once implemented, and results are quantified, SSC can assist with developing marketing material to communicate your successes to employees, customers, regulators, and other stakeholders. Sustainable Solutions Corporation Case Study – Manufacturing Facility This 111,000 square foot building was first constructed in 1964, with subsequent additions through the 1990s. In order to integrate sustainability into the facility, products and processes, SSC first performed a Sustainable Product Analysis which included a site visit to the facility to complete a preliminary evaluation of the products and operations. The preliminary Sustainability Assessment identified low- and no-cost improvements that could be easily implemented to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs. One of the most notable improvement opportunities was a minor adjustment to the thermal oxidizer to improve the efficiency of the propane gas usage. SSC also conducted a detailed review of the product lines to determine the green and sustainable aspects of the plant and products to assist with the development of green marketing materials. Following the Sustainable Product Analysis, SSC performed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of one of the products manufactured at the facility. The resulting LCA data was used to determine opportunities for further improvement in the sustainability of the product, from raw materials extraction to product end of life. The life cycle data revealed a water leak throughout the process, which was another low-cost, easily implementable improvement that would result in significant savings. Sustainability Assessment By implementing the above noted operational improvements identified by SSC, this facility reduced propane usage by 20%, providing an annual cost savings of $188,000 (based on 2010 oil prices) and reduced water consumption by 50%, for an additional annual savings of over $4,500.
