Multi-Stage Flash Distillation (MSF) involves a thermal desalination process. Seawater and brackish water are generally used as raw water (source product). Microfouling, especially the precipitation of salts (scaling), can significantly affect the transfer of heat in the MSF plant. In addition, frequent unplanned downtimes, which consequently occur in MSF plants in order to carry out manual cleaning procedures, become unavoidable and are likely to cause damage to the MSF plant.
