Tire Recycling NewsQuarterly Report from CM Sarasota OperationsWinter Edition 2010 Volume IIIThe Revolution ContinuesCM is Proud to Introduce its New Zero Waste Processing SystemThis new system is capable of processing 4-6 inch shred into wire free TDF, mulch, coarse rubber and/or crumb rubberfeed stock along with exceptional clean tire wire in one complete system. The system is also capable of cleaning and separating rubber and steel from processes that generates otherwise unus-able, contaminated material. Commingled rubber and steel from TDF or crumb rubber systems can easily be processedand separated recovering valuable rubber and steel fragments eliminating disposal costs and creating additional rev-enue streams. The wire produced from this system is exceptionally clean and free of rubber particles and has less than 3% contami-nates by weight. At the heart of the system is the CM Liberator. Depending on capacity a CM2R or 4R Liberator can be used. The systemis extremely robust and low maintenance.Seeing is BelievingThe new CM Zero Waste system is on display and is fully operational at CM's manufacturing facility in Sarasota, Floridaand you are invited to see the system in operation.CM is conveniently located to both Sarasota or Tampa airport and we have a corporate agreement with Marriott Hotelsalso located close to CM, downtown Sarasota and our outstanding beaches, golf and other amenitiesVisit our Marriott web portal to book your hotel here: Marriott HotelsSarasota Airport is serviced by: Delta, Jet Blue, US Airways, Air Canada, Air France, Alitalia and KLM and Tampa Interna-tional has many additional airlines partners and is located just one hour north of Sarasota.Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)Tampa International Airport (TPA)Call or e-mail us today to schedule your time to visit and be on site at the CM facility for this exciting demonstration ofour latest tire processing system. Until now those tires havebeen discarded all over the countryside, tossed awayonto farms, piled up as silos, or dumped along road-ways and other rural properties creating serious ?rehazards and mosquito and rodent infestations - a majorliability and intense eyesore on the landscape. New Zealand’s Ministry of the Environment along withthe countries two major tire manufacturers; Dunlopand Bridgestone have talked about this mounting prob-lem for many years, but none have ever taken respon-sibility for the collection and proper disposal ofend-of-life tires. Enter Owen Douglas, a Kiwi cattlefarmer and entrepreneur who came onto the scene likean environmental white knight back in the late 1990’s. Over the years his cattle and sheep farms had beenamong the dumping sites with mountains of tires thathad accumulated. Mr. Douglas spent several years tire-lessly doing vast amounts of research, attending edu-cational seminars and traveling the globe to learneverything he could about waste tire processing. In theend, he concluded that the best way to rid his countryof all the tire piles and all future tire disposal was toshred the tires for TDF. Mr. Douglas set up his new venture as Tyre Disposal,Ltd. and made his ?rst pitch to introduce the idea locallyto the NZ Dairy Co. to process the tires at its coal ?redfacility. Sadly, the project never got o? the ground dueto corporate restructuring. Brushing o? this ?rst hurdlehe spent the next six years meeting with many powerplants, cement companies and paper mills in NZ butwas sidelined by indi?erence among the principals toaccept TDF as a fuel source and by NZ environmentalo?cers who decided that burning TDF “was not a goodidea.” During this time Mr. Douglas had been having conver-sations with the team at CM including Mike Playdonnow retired and the father of one of CM’s Field Techi-cians, Josh Playdon and CM Sales Mgr. Rick Colyar. Theychose to investigate other options for potential marketsfor Owen and contacted Chris Aum, Sales Manager fore & Resources of Korea and CM Sales Representativefor Asia. Chris was able to arrange for Owen to meetwith the group at Asia Cement, located just outside ofSeoul to discuss the opportunity. Earlier this year themeeting took place and in less than ?fteen minutes AsiaCement eagerly agreed to take as much TDF as Tyre Dis-posal could produce and ship. With this agreement nowin place Owen placed the order with CM for a DualSpeed Shredder, a stage one processing system speci?-cally designed to produce clean cut 2” chips ideal forTDF. The system is now in transit for early January de-livery to Tauranga with the plan to ship 1,000, 20’ con-tainers of 2” tire chips (20,000 m/tons) to Koreaannually.Mr. Douglas has set up his facility at an old dairy com-pany close to the railway at the Waharoa Industrial Parkin Tauranga. He plans to supply lockable containers toany site with a stockpile of old tires, even for one-o?cleanups, and will charges per tire. Targeted clients in-clude; quarry and mining operations, contractors, tireretailers and council transfer stations. The tipping feesare based on the size of the tire. Passenger tires will becharged $6 with larger tires up to 50kg at $30, and min-ing tires weighting up to a ton cost will be charged $250to be collected. Tyre Disposal has already begun collect-ing tires, which are temporarily stored in an old quarryclose by and ready for processing.Owen, now in his 70’s has fought long and hard to winthis for New Zealand. Over the next several years wewill see a dramatic change in the rural landscape alongwith stronger initiatives for environmental sustainabilityand a higher level of accountability from the NZ gov-ernment and tire industry because of his e?orts overthe past decade.
