Since the impeller is com-pletely recessed within the pump, actual contact with the process fluid is infrequent and solids the size of the dischargeopening may be handled.ModelsThe Hayward Gordon TORUS pump is manufactured in three (3) distinct wet end designs from 2" up to 8", each with acomplete range of up to sixteen (16) models. This allows the selection of the best combination of pump size, compo-nent design and materials of construction for each specific process application. The standard Torus design also allowsfor interchangeability of component styles and metallurgies so that the most cost efficient and durable unit may besupplied.Torus XRDesigned specifically for applications with severe abrasives, the TORUS XR pump is produced in Ni-Hard, Super Ni-Hard,CD4MCU or high chrome alloys. The XR wet ends feature extra thick impeller vanes, back plate and integral wearelement and volute casing.Torus R.Available in cast iron, Ni-Hard, CD4MCU, stainless steel, Alloy-20 and bronze construction, the TORUS R pump featuresthe unique back plate and integral wear element, to provide an ideal solution for pumping tough to handle fluids contain-ing corrosives, large solids and/or abrasives.Torus RSCast in a wide range of metallurgies, the TORUS RS pump eliminates the annular wear element and utilizes a largerdiameter impeller to provide the most efficient design for handling fluids containing less abrasive sludges and solids and/or corrosive media.Unit ConfigurationThe modular approach to the Hayward Gordon product line also allows us to offer the TORUS pump as Horizontal,Vertical Dry Pit, Vertical Cantilever, Vertical Lineshaft or Submersible designs.Pump ConstructionVolute CasingThe TORUS pump casing is a one piece casting with integral suction and discharge nozzles. The internal clearancesbetween suction and discharge will permit passage of solids to a maximum sphere size of the discharge flange. Thecasting feet will fully support the casing allowing the suction and discharge piping to remain connected to the voluteduring removal of the impeller, back plate, shaft and bearing assembly, therefore providing a true pull-out design.Page: 1 31-Aug-99TORUS Recessed Impeller PumpsAll ConfigurationsGENERAL OVERVIEWHAYWARD GORDONSolids Handling Pumps6660 Campobello Rd, Mississauga, Ontario L5N 2L9Tel: (905) 567-6116 • Fax: (905) 567-1706 • www.haywardgordon.comWearplate and Integral Peripheral Wear ElementThe Torus Model XR and R pumps incorporate a thick walled wear element, located peripherally around the impeller andintegral with the back wearplate (the components on the XR are considerably thicker than on the R). These componentsprovide an inexpensive sacrificial barrier, protecting the pump casing from major erosion.A key feature of the TORUS design is that the wear element protects the casing from abrasive attack in the area ofmaximum wear. Without this feature, the casing would be a primary replacement part instead of the much less expen-sive wear element. Moreover, flexibility of material combinations allows for the use of hard metal only on the main wearparts. The TORUS Model RS pumps feature the back wearplate without the annular wear element.ImpellerThe TORUS recessed impeller pumps are true vortex pumps, that is the impeller is fully recessed in the casing, minimiz-ing contact with the fluid or process material. The rotating impeller creates a swirling action which slowly builds uppressure in the casing enabling even delicate crystals to be pumped without damage. The TORUS impeller has straight non-clogging vanes permitting easy passage for both fibrous and sticky solids andpositive pump out vanes on the back to keep solids out of the stuffing box and to minimize pressure on packing seals. For abrasive applications, XR impellers are provided with a thicker vane cross section.Hayward Gordon machines precision fit, keyed impeller bores even in hard metals. Some other designs use soft cores(such as babbit) in the hub area that can enlarge prematurely causing the impeller to become loose on the shaft.Stuffing Box SealsThe TORUS stuffing box is easily accessible and designed to accommodate standard packing ,single or double me-chanical seals. For cast iron and Ni-Hard pumps, there is a cast iron stuffing box with bronze split gland, while our 316stainless steel pumps have alloy stuffing boxes. Flush connections to the seal area are available and leakage from thepacking is collected with an integral cast reservoir in the powerframe, where an elbow connection can be supplied todirect the leakage to a suitable drain.Page: 2 31-Aug-99
