TAUBER TUNNELING WITH SEGMENTSMADE OF POLYMER CONCRETEP O L Y C R E T E ® S E G M E N T SThis construction method uses a conventional open faceshield-tunneling machine. The soil is excavated by adrag bucket, which is typically set on rails and pulledback to the insertion shaft where it is emptied.Pre-fabricated POLYCRETE® segments, or tubbings aresafely installed behind the driving shield. The pipe,which consists of three segments, provides the supportfor driving the shield. In conventional micro tunnelingor pipe jacking the pipe is jacked through the soil bylarge hydraulic forces. With the TAUBER tunnel systemthe previously installed tubbings do not move.POLYCRETE ® SEGMENTS ONE BY ONELEAK PROOF, CORROSION-RESISTANT PIPELINEMADE OF POLYCRETE SEGMENTSPrior to the development of POLYCRETE® pipe segmentsinstalled by minitunneling it was always necessary to installa minitunnel casing pipe made of non-corrosion resistantmaterial. A corrosion resistant inner pipe was then pulledinside the casing. This method is commonly known as the„Two Pass System“. Now that POLYCRETE® segmentsconsisting of only corrosion resistant polymer concrete areused the „Two Pass System“ is not necessary. The materialproperties, which meet the requirements of GermanStandard DIN 54815, insure that the pipeline is corrosionresistant.SEALINGThe pre-fabricated pipe seg-ments make up a high qualityleak proof pipe. The tongueand groove joints are bondedwith an epoxy resin, whichremains elastic. When the resin is cured the annulusbetween the outside of the pipe and the soil is filled witha fine gravel (2-8mm) and grouted in place. This procedureinsures that the pipe meets the required test pressure of5 m water column.MAINTENANCE OF SEWAGE FLOW DURINGCONSTRUCTIONBranch sewers may be connected to the new interceptorsewer during construction. These branch sewers maycontinue in operation. Bypassing the branch sewer is notrequired. House connections may also be connected to thenew interceptor during construction.COST-EFFICIENCYThe TAUBER tunnel system with POLYCRETE® pipesegments is very cost efficient. The outside diameter of thepipe segments is smaller than the outside diameter of thecasing in a „Two Pass System“, there is less soil tobe removed, and only one pipe is required. Branchsewers and house connections can be made and none ofthese sewers or house connections require bypassing.LESS DISRUPTIONSmall diameter insertion and reception shafts less than 3.8meters in diameter are required.SHARP BENDS POSSIBLESince the pipe does not move after it is installed in theground, the bend radius may be as small as 65 meters.NO PROBLEM WITH OBSTACLES IN THE WAYObstacles in the path of the open face shield may beremoved without having to dig up the tunneling machine.NO PROBLEM WITH SUBSIDENCE OR HEAVESince the driving force is as low as 60 tons there is verylittle or no subsidence or heave. This benefit allows thenew pipeline to be constructed very close to buildings, gasline, water lines, etc.NO LIMITATION OF PIPE RUN LENGTHThe TAUBER tunnel system allows construction of piperuns of any length. Intermediate jacking stations used inmicrotunneling and pipe jacking are not required.MATCHING POLYMER CONCRETE MANHOLESTangental manholes with the bottom part made of onecomplete segment ring can be directly connected with thesegmental pipeline. The result is one complete corrosionresistant, leak proof system. All from one supplier.THE BENEFITSPOLYCRETE ® SEGMENTSMINI TUNNEL SYSTEMThe most important part of the corrosion resistant TAUBERtunnel system are the segments. These segments are poly-mer concrete pipe segments, which are 60 or75 cm long. The joints are tongue and groove in theaxial direction. Three segments are joined to make upeach pipe ring.
