When using ARP, a part of the biological process is moved from the original activated sludge plant to a volume, including only the return sludge, with varying nitrification and denitri-fication and with a concentration of sludge that is significantly higher than in the activated sludge plant. Depending on the needs and the plant configuration the ARP process can be used for increasing the hydraulic and/or organic capacity of the existing WWTP.This way we can improve the volume utilization considerably. In corporation with EnviDan, the ARP process was im-plemented covering 25% of the total existing process volume. The hydraulic capacity was thereby increased by 50% and an expansion including a secondary clari-fier was no longer necessary.At Bjergmarken WWTP, the organic capacity was increased by more than 20% by using 9% of the total volume for the ARP-process.
