Van Dorn Water Sampler Model 11.xxx Series Manual
Van Dorn Water Sampler Model 11.xxx series Manual KC Denmark A/S Research Equipment Limnology z Oceanography z Hydrobiology Manual for Van Dorn Water Sampler Model no. 11.000 series Preparation: 1 Open the Van Dorn water sampler by pulling the elastic bands and lids back and secure the hooks as shown. Make sure that the mechanism is locked so that it will be released by the releasers weight. Make sure that the valve is closed. Do not place hands inside or on the seal of the container; this could contaminate the sampler. To reduce chances of contamination, wear powder-free latex laboratory gloves. 2 Attach the free end of the messenger line to the boat. Rinse the open sampler by immersing it in the water column. 3 Lower the sampler to the desired depth. 4 Release the sampler by releasing the messenger weight so that it slides down the line. The sampler must be covered by water when the drop messenger is released. Releasing the sampler in free air (height > 2 metres) might cause damage to the release system on the sampler. 2 Emptying the sampler Raise the full sampler out of the water. Set in on a clean, flat surface in an upright position. To avoid any contamination, do not set the sampler in the bottom of the boat. Empty the water sampler by releasing the tap at the bottom of the tube. 5 When emptying the sampler, the amount of water through the tap, can be adjusted by the upper air valve. For 2- and 3- litres models you must allow a slightly opening of the valve to empty the bottle. For the 5 litres model we recommend to keep the valve closed at the beginning to avoid a heavy flow at the tap. In-situ temperature 6 To determine the in-situ temperature, the water sampler has a standard thermometer mounted. Temperature range between –10 and +60 C°. Maintenance 7 Rinse all parts in fresh water and store the sampler at a dry place leaving the lids in open position. Do not use alcohol for cleaning acrylic parts. Do not expose to direct sunlight or salt water for a long period as it will affect the durability and stability of the rubber bands, seals and O-rings. Rev.
