A main-tenance-free membrane pump continuouslyfeeds the sample gas to the optical cell wherelight absorption measurement takes place ata wavelength of 253.7 nm. This so-called "coldvapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CVAAS)"measuring method is extremely sensitive formercury determination and has been usedsuccessfully for many years. In contrast to theoccasionally propagated atomic fluorescencespectroscopy (AFS) method it is low in interfe-rence and requires neither an amalgamationstep nor expensive noble gases as carriers.Analytical PerformanceThe VM-3000 uses a high-frequency drivenelectrodeless Hg low pressure (EDL) lamp asUV source. It generates emission lines of anextremely narrow bandwidth which are con-gruent with the absorption lines of the Hgatoms. Cross-sensitivities are thus minimized. The extremely high stability of the UV sourcein the VM 3000 is a result of the referencebeam feedback control method. Total back-ground noise is less than 0.1 µg/m3. To preventtemperature drift both the lamp unit and thedetectors are temperature-stabilized. Becausethe optical cell is heated the VM-3000 isinsensitive to water vapor.Special Featuresl Metal housing with sturdy handlel Option: Rack version with mounting brackets for 19" racksl Membrane pump with long service lifel Input filter with teflon membrane l Stable optical benchl Factory-calibratedEasy to operateThe user controls the VM-3000 by menu-guided inputs via a waterproof membrane keypad. Afterswitch-on the light source is stabilized (approx.1 - 15 minutes). When the measurement mode isstarted, a zero adjustment is first carried outautomatically. Then the analyzer switches tomeasurement and continuously indicates themeasured mercury concentration of the gas asa numerical value and a graphic bar. The follo-wing settings are possible in the "parameters"menu: duration and repeat interval of the zeroadjustment, selection of the concentration unit (µg/m3 or ppb), measuring range (0.1-100,0-1000, 0-2000 µg/m3), input of three differentalarm levels, calculation of a mean value overthree freely selectable time intervals, printeractivation, and, if required, a sample dilutionfactor.VM-3000 flow chart MERCURY INSTRUMENTS · ANALYTICAL TECHNOLOGIESDisplay and Output ofMeasurementsThe result of the measurement is display-ed on an LCD in real time, both numericallyand graphically and is output as an electricalsignal of 4-20 mA. The device has outputs foralarm, status and measurement values for fullintegration in plant control systems. The devi-ce also has a serial interface (RS 232) for datacollection on a PC.ExtensionsThe VM-3000 Mercury Vapor Monitor isthe basic model of our modular system formercury analytics. An optional reactionunit and activationof the relevant soft-ware turn it into alaboratory unit forliquid samples.A gold trapinstalled upstreamallows measure-ments in the extre-me trace range.Multiplexer operationA multiplexer unit can be connected forautomatic monitoring of several measure-ment points. See information in special broschure.Self Diagnosis System If an important component of the VM-3000malfunctions the user is warned via the dis-play (blinking messages: clean cell, lamp, lowbattery, alarm) and via output signals.Battery OperationFor operation independent from mainspower the VM-3000 is also available with abuilt-in rechargable battery and a chargerunit. This option allows mobile battery-powered applications of up to approx.5 hours.Data Logger FunctionA data logger function can be integratedinto the VM-3000 as an option. Up to 30000readings can be stored in the data memory. The logging interval can be set from 1 - 16seconds revealing a total recording capacityof 4-60 hours. The stored data can be readout with a PC using the serial interface of theVM-3000 according RS232 standard.Graphical and numerical display of results in realtimePrecise and proven technique:Mercury Vapor Monitor VM-3000Extension:Laboratory analyzer for mercury VM-3000 Mercury Vapor Monitor Technical SpecificationsMeasuring principle: UV-AbsorptionWavelength: 253,7 nmUV source: Electrodeless low-pressure mercury lampStabilization: reference beam and thermalOptical cell: fused silica (Suprasil), 23 cm longOptical cell heating: approx. 70° CMeasuring range: 1...100µg/m3; 1...1000µg/m3; 1 - 2000µg/m3Sensitivity: 0.1 µg/m3Response time: 1 secComputation of autom. via three freelymean value: selectable time intervalsAlarm: when concentration is exceeded,3 levels are programmableStatus alarms: measuring cell soiled, battery state, UV sourceControl pad: waterproof membrane keypadMeasurement display: Graphic display with background lightingSignal outputs: 4...20 mA for recorder;RS 232 bidirectional for PC, data logger etc.,parallel for printerPump: membrane pump, approx. 2 L / min.optional Flow meter with alarm messageFilter: PTFE, 1 µ, 47-50 mm diameterPower supply: 110 ... 240 V/(50/60 Hz)Battery operation: optional, 12 V batteries integrated, 6 h capacityor external DC SourceData logger-function: Up to 30000 readings capacityPower consumption: 40 WDimensions: 45 x 15 x 35 cm (W x H x D)Weight: approx. 7 kgMercury Instruments GmbHAnalytical TechnologiesLiebigstraße 11bD-85757 KarlsfeldTel.: +49 (0)8131 - 50 57 20Fax: +49 (0)8131 - 50 57 22mail@mercury-instruments.deThe Response to an Analytical Challenge:Mercury Instruments.Quantitative trace analysis of mercury has been a challenging task for the analyst until now.
