Water and Energy okt 2010.docx 1 The Water & Energy shop Introduction People in Developing Countries often do not have good drinking water and electricity available. Nevertheless the need for these commodities is high and people are willing to pay for it. But the initial investments to set up these services are high and due to a lack in capital, often people are deprived of these basic commodities. To solve this problem Aqua-Aero WaterSystems (AAWS) developed the Water & Energy Shop concept. Water & Energy Shops can be operated in a (financial) sustainably way in those places were water shortage are eminent and people are willing to pay money for the delivery of clean water. Set-up and funding First a realistic cost- and income analysis has to be made showing that a financial sustainable Water& Energy Shop is achievable. Then funding for the project has to be arranged by the client. When needed AAWS can deliver support in searching for (part of the) funding. Once the funding is secured the project is implemented and a local entrepreneurs is selected to run the Water & Energy Shops. The entrepreneur is trained to become a reliable water vendor. In case that AAWS takes part in the funding of the project, a repayment schedule is agreed on which is partly based on the income generated with the sales of water & energy. The cost for operation and maintenance of the Water & Energy Shop are low. Based on sufficient demand our concept provides income from day one and as a result the enterprise can be made profitable and sustainable. Water and Energy okt 2010.docx 2 Water & Energy Shop The Water & Energy shop consists of a UV unit and a solar panel system. The UV unit is used to purify up to 20.000 liter of fresh drinking water each day. The solar energy is trapped in batteries so that the sales can also go on during the morning- and evening hours when there is less sunlight. Advantages of the Water & Energy Shop • Clean drinking water and energy is easily provided; • Operational costs of the shop are low, increasing the chances of a successful enterprise; • Employment- , income - and health situation of people is increased; • Environment is saved; • Operation and maintenance of the Water& Energy Shop is simple. Durable and sustainable technology Both the technology for UV disinfection and the provision of energy through solar panels is environmental friendly: The usage of gasoline and the generation of air pollution is minimized. Another major difference is that there is no need for cutting wood, normally needed to boil contaminated water. Trees and woods are saved and air pollution resulting from the burning wood is minimized. Operation and maintenance of the system can be done by local workers. Water and Energy okt 2010.docx 3 Technical background info The purification unit is based on UV disinfection. Polluted water is routed though a reactor. The radiation of the UV lamp transforms polluted water into drinkable water. As a result, bacteria, viruses and other pathogens are killed with an effectiveness of 99,9%. Dependant on the local situation the energy for disinfection can be delivered through solar panels. It can be also used to charge batteries for electrical applications such as phones, lamps and TV sets. Local entrepreneur is critical for success In order to reach a long term sustainability of the Water & Energy Shop, involvement of local entrepreneurs is critical. The entrepreneurs are trained to operated and maintain a Water & Energy Shop. He/she becomes responsible for the sales of the water & energy on the marketplace and is supported in this by the local NGO that is affiliated with AAWS.
