acqua alta 2011

SHARE

The impact of climate change is apparent everywhere – sea levels are rising, and regional extreme weather and flood events are becoming more frequent, threatening the habitats of humans and wildlife. In May 2010, a flood wave on the River Oder inundated Brandeburg and Poland. In August 2010, hundreds of thousand of people hat to flee from the water which the heavy monsoon rains brought with them. More recently floods in Australia destroyed over 40 cities and become a great danger for the renowned.

This and other consequences of climate change for flood protection will be at the focus of acqua alta 2011. This unique event is a meeting place for decision makers from industry, science and government, for discussion of effective strategies for the future. At a venue in Hamburg, where water has always been a key factor in people’s lives.

Ideas are the basis for new strategies

For three days, CCH – Congress Center Hamburg will be fully concentrating on climate changes issues, with their impact on flood protection, coastal defences and disaster response. acqua alta is once more the only international exhibition and conference event in 2011 that brings together experts from industry, academia and government at one table. This interdisciplinary exchange of views at the highest level gives participants a chance to take the wider view, moving towards new strategies and solution concepts for dealing with flooding as a consequence of climate change.

Key theme for 2011: Building by the water

Living by the water is a dream for many people. New concepts are needed for environmentally sound, safe building by the water, in order to meet a whole range of requirements for safety and in response to climate change. This additional theme makes the event even more interesting for many target groups- architects and construction engineers, for example, who can get targeted information on individual aspects of planning development work.

Delegates at acqua alta are high-calibre experts with top-level decision making powers. As an exhibitor here you can make even closer contact with your existing customers – and above all, you can meet potential new customers face to face.

acqua alta gets good publicity even before the start of the exhibition, thanks to the multiplier role played by the relevant industry associations, engineering bureausm and leading research establishments and universities. They help to attract the right trade visitors to the exhibition.

The trade visitors at acqua alta include delegates from the private and public sectors, from industry and from government and research:

  • (Senior) staff from Federal and State ministries, city administrations, countries and local authorities (which mostly make the decisions on investments in flood protection)
  • Members and staff of associations responsible for land, water and dikes; international river commissions
  • (Consulting) engineers, in particular those who plan flood defence facilities and hydropower installations
  • Infrastructure companies: building and civil engineering firms
  • Architects and spatial, landscape and urban planners
  • Relief, disaster management and emergency aid organisations
  • Hydrologist, geologists, meteorologists
  • Delegates from science and research (students, professors, academic staff)
  • Insurance companies, financial services
  • Agriculture and forestry

acqua alta 2011 is a prime information source for trade visitors and conference delegates, telling them about innovative products and services in the following areas.

acqua alta gives comprehensive coverage of all the key issues related to climate and weather – with data capture, processing, evaluation and display, and with forecasting of extreme climate events. For many years now, it has been the world’s leading expert forum for presentation and discussion of issues related to climate change, and the resulting tasks for government, business and academia.

  • Adaptation strategies and action plans
  • Climate research and forecasting
  • Climate action
  • Warning systems
  • Water governance
  • Meteorological services and weather information systems

The core issues at acqua alta are focused on flood protection, covering general precautionary measures and organisational & technical measures. The main emphasis is on long-term strategic and planning concepts of inter-disciplinary zone planning.

  • Land use conflicts
  • River and dyke engineering
  • Flood forecasting and warning systems
  • Mobile flood defence facilities
  • Nature conservation and landscape planning
  • Land zoning, urban development and landuse planning
  • Rainwater management
  • Flood defence engineering
  • Transport and business planning

Where disaster is threatening, the main focus is on mobile flood protection in risk and disaster management, to minimise damage and losses. This requires technical and organisational measures, and will be covered thoroughly at acqua alta.

  • Erosion protection
  • Basic services / water management in disaster situations
  • Communication systems
  • Reporting and alert centres
  • Emergency accommodation, wood, modular systems and textile
  • Storm warnings
  • Temporary flood defences
  • Tourism and safety
  • Civil protection and disaster services

Global climate change has a severe impact on the coasts, particularly with increasing rise in sea level. acqua alta presents concepts and measures for integrated coastal management, attracting specialists and representatives of affected areas throughout Europe. The importance for inter-regional cooperation is evident in this interdisciplinary field.

  • Coastal protection engineering
  • Coastal zone management
  • Nature conservation / nature reserves
  • Regional planning
  • Marine and port construction

Barriers and dams play a major part in acqua alta – they are a key element in flood defences. Risk prevention is another important issue in this area, calling for new solutions in planning, engineering and disaster prevention. The new subject of “Hydropower” is added to acqua alta from 2009 onwards, completing the description of the complex role of barriers and dams.

  • Power generating by hydroelectric power stations
  • Industries for manufacture of hydroengineering products
  • Planning and technology
  • Zoning and planning of residential areas
  • Special forms of use of water power
  • Dams and barriers
  • Architecture and civil engineering
  • Construction technology and building materials
  • Projects and practical examples of living by the water
  • Spatial and urban planning concepts

acqua alta aims to promote knowledge transfer between governments, academia and business. The acqua alta 2009 conference and trade fair gives opportunities for government, academia and business to exchange views on the latest developments in the wide range of issues associated with climate change.
