Middle East Waste Summit 2010
As several GCC countries rank in the top waste producers in the world, Dubai Municipality took a bold decision to launch the Middle East Waste Summit in 2009 where over 2,600 industry leaders from 50 countries gathered to debate and demonstrate the most efficient ways to rapidly develop next-generation waste management and recycling schemes in the region. During the summit, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Dubai Municipality and Imdaad, a Dubai World company that offers outsourced management services in facilities management and consultancy, helping mark the successful debut of the Middle East Waste Summit. “The first Middle East Waste Summit 2009 was very successful. It attracted a significant number of visitors and participants, as well as major lecturers. Furthermore, the summit delivered its key messages about the many issues and solutions regarding waste management and stressed the importance of enhancing the cooperation between the private and public sector”, said Eng. Hassan Mohammed Makki, Director of the Waste Management Department, Dubai Municipality.
Rapid urbanisation, high population growth rates, diversifi ed cultures, fl oating populations and high consumption have brought about signifi cant waste management challenges to many cities within the GCC region. Not least, because these countries collectively produce more than 120 million tonnes of waste every year.
The UAE is one of the biggest producers of waste in the region but it has also chosen to be an example in responding to its responsibilities through strategic partnerships with the private sector. In 2009 alone, these partnerships have seen the region`s largest medical waste treatment plant open in Dubai, a US$300 million contract awarded for the operation of a demolition waste facility in Abu Dhabi and another to rebuild and operate a tyre recycling plant in Al Ain.
Dubai Municipality has developed the Middle East Waste Summit as a platform to protect the environment and preserve living standards. To share strategies, explore global best practice and find companies who can deliver innovative waste management solutions to the region.
The Middle East Waste Summit has quickly established itself as the premier networking event for any company seeking opportunities within the region, with 25% of attendees in 2008 being Government representatives or operating at Chairman, President, Vice President, CEO or Managing Director level - the decision makers are there to listen, debate policy and make contacts to implement strategies.
The Summit Exhibition will provide 100 leading companies with the opportunity to showcase their latest services and solutions to leading purchasers in the region.
Keynote conference sessions each morning will give delegates the opportunity to hear from leading industry experts addressing issues of strategy, implementation and best practice.
A programme of round table debates each afternoon will give attendees the chance to tackle topics in depth, discuss specific applications and ask questions in small groups.
We are looking for organisations that have solutions and business opportunities for the region’s waste management and recycling industry to participate in this event.
