The Air and Waste Management Association was founded in 1905. It is a non-profit technical, scientific, and educational organization with more than 8,000 individuals from industry, government, and the consulting, research, academic, and legal communities who engage in the exchange of technical and managerial information. Local member units called Sections and Chapters have been formed within the AWMA to provide for addressing regional and local issues and facilitate better interaction at the local level for members. The Rocky Mountain States Section (RMSS) is comprised of members from Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, and eastern Nevada. There are two Chapter organizations within the section; one is in Utah – the Great Basin Chapter; and the other is located in New Mexico –  the New Mexico Chapter.

There are over 300 AWMA members in the region considered the Rocky Mountain States Section. The RMSS membership includes decision makers from: the local, state, and federal environmental agencies; industry; business; consulting; and the academic and research communities. The section sponsors monthly meetings and addresses environmental issues from many viewpoints (technical, scientific, legal, political, social, and economic). The majority of meetings are held in Denver, Colorado where speakers are available from the many federal agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, National Park Service, and National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL); the many municipal governments such as the city of Colorado Springs, City of Arvada, City of Boulder, etc.; industries such as Ball Corporation and Adolph Coors Company; the many environmental services and equipment suppliers in the region including analytical laboratories, pollution control equipment suppliers, and consulting engineering firms; and the many academic and research institutions. From these many resources the RMSS is able to sponsor meetings that address pertinent issues in the environmental field.
