UrbanTec Smart Technologies for Better Cities 2012
UrbanTec is an international, export-oriented platform for German and European industry leaders for one of the main issues relevant to the future in the technology sector. The event showcases high-quality solutions from international manufacturers who work to create lasting improvements in the quality of life in major cities. The event is targeted at existing, growing and future conurbations, major cities and megacities. It focuses on industrial contributions that reduce the impacts of climate change and population growth, and conserve raw materials.
2007 marked the first time there were more people living in cities and metropolitan areas than in the countryside. This forces authorities to invest enormous amounts in expanding, converting and adding to their infrastructure. Sustainable concepts for traffic, for efficient construction, for intelligent energy and water supply are the main challenges, and they can only be overcome with the aid of innovative solutions. Politics, industry, business and science have come to realise that they must work together to implement sustainable urban development that will maintain and improve the inhabitants` quality of life. This worldwide need opens up enormous opportunities for companies in all of the industries dealing with urbanisation and its impact to develop the market with innovative concepts, systems or products. New solutions offer megacities and district towns alike the opportunity to come to grips with their requirements in terms of urban infrastructure.

With UrbanTec 2012, koelnmesse is creating an export-oriented marketplace for national and international industry. Spanning multiple industries, the event offers the entire spectrum for urbanisation: the system solutions, components, systems and services it takes to meet urban needs.

With UrbanTec Koelnmesse creates an export-oriented market place of international industry. UrbanTec will show technologies and developments which enable a sustainable improvement of life in existing, growing and newly to be constructed conurbations and megacities. The exhibition bundles system solutions, components, installations and services for the coverage of urban requirements among a variety of industries. Thereby the potential is tremendous: the OECD predicts that globally 30 trillion euros are at disposal and need to be invested in urban infrastructures.
The congress trade fair UrbanTec made a successful debut from 24th to 26th October 2011 in Cologne as the Koelnmesse presented the first separate event dedicated to providing a cross-sector overview of urbanisation - a key topic for the future. The exhibiting companies and congress participants at the UrbanTec 2011 expressed their satisfaction with the premiere and numerous representatives from politics, industry, economy and science strongly encouraged the Koelnmesse to develop the event into the leading platform for dialogue by underlining the need for common action to meet future urban challenges.
The participants at UrbanTec included 55 exhibiting companies from four countries, about 900 participants and visitors from 20 countries within the congress and the exhibition running in parallel as well as more the 100 media representatives from 16 countries. The participants with stands in the exhibition area in Hall 7 at the Cologne exhibition centre included 12 major German industrial companies: Siemens, Lanxess, Bayer MaterialScience, Daimler AG, Strabag Real Estate, TÜV Rheinland, TÜV Nord Cert, RWE, E.ON, RAG Aktiengesellschaft, DHL and PWC. Also represented were joint participations from Brazil, Russia, Switzerland, the government of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft branch in Cologne.

The companies presented technological solutions for all areas of application in urban life — including from the segments construction engineering, energy, health and hygiene, mobility and logistics, resource recovery/urban mining, related services, and information & communication.
Top level support for UrbanTec was provided by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in its role as the patron of the event, and the Federation of German Industry (BDI), which served as a partner in the realisation of the congress programme.
At the official opening of UrbanTec, Gudrun Kopp, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, pointed out the importance of sustainable development of cities, particularly in rapidly growing major cities in developing countries and emerging markets. “The development policy goal of creating the conditions needed for sustainable urban development coincides ideally with the leading role played by the German private sector in offering innovative solutions for cities,” said Kopp.
The premiere of UrbanTec attracted interest from around the world. A total of about 900 congress participants and trade fair visitors from 20 countries attended the event. Represented in Cologne were, for example, visitors and delegations from China, Brazil, Argentina, Russia and Germany’s neighbouring European countries. At the UrbanTec congress, which was attended by leading professionals, international experts gave presentations shedding light on the global effects of urbanization and identified the political conditions needed to realise technological solutions. The main themes of the UrbanTec congress were “Infrastructure”, “Mobility and Logistics” and “Buildings”. The speakers who travelled to Cologne for the event included the renowned US political consultant Jeremy Rifkin; Professor Klaus Töpfer, formerly Executive Director of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and now Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS); Dr. Roland Busch, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and CEO of the Infrastructure & Cities Sector; and Prof. Hans-Jörg Bullinger (President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft).
Koelnmesse sees valuable potential in “urbanisation” as a future key topic and is positioning UrbanTec as an annual congress trade fair in the market. Therefore the event will take place again in Cologne from the 24th to 26th October 2012. The promising launch of UrbanTec in October 2011 and discussions with numerous decision makers from industry, politics and from national or international authorities reassured the Koelnmesse to hold the convention annually. From the 24th to 26th October the UrbanTec is back with expanded und targeted topics and an outlook on the latest trends and solutions for urban development.
Parallel to the exhibition supply an international conference takes place in the context of UrbanTec. The congress covers economic and socio-political challenges of the worldwide urbanisation as well as the essential framework requirement for realisation of the technological point of view in future cities.

International approved keynote speakers will talk about the latest technological approaches, political and financial framework conditions as well as best practice examples. Main topics are „Infrastructure”, „Mobility and Logistics” and „Buildings and Networks”
The congress topics find their practically oriented reflection in the exhibition as well as the in guided visiting tours to special demonstration fields.
In charge of the high class conference program is our partner of congress, the Federation of German Industries (BDI).
As part of UrbanTec the visitors were given the opportunity to visit the flood protection of the city of Cologne.
Visitors were presented the flood protection strategy for the city of Cologne. The structural flood control measures and the technical resources (including FLIWAS = flood information and warning system, flood hazard maps) were presented and discussed. Then the small group visited a pumping station that is 26 meters deep under the earth.
Floodwater Protection of the City of Cologne
Of all major cities of Europe, the City of Cologne is the one most subject to flooding. It survived the most recent major flood in 1995 with Cologne Gauge registering a water level of 10.69 m. The flood of `95 required an extreme deployment not only of workers but also of material. While the response in 1995 prevented even worse damage and assistance in a very wide variety of forms was provided to the citizens in the areas affected by the flooding, it must be observed that Cologne only narrowly escaped a major catastrophe.
The Cologne Municipal Water Treatment Works (Kölner Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln, AöR - or StEB for short) is a modern and innovative municipally owned company. To fulfil the overall mission of our spectrum of services, our staff features employees who come to us from many disciplines. Our tasks include the elimination of wastewater, flood protection and prevention, and the maintenance and expansion of the waters in and around Cologne. As part of our flood-protection mission, we at StEB apply the basic concept of preventative regional and supra-regional flood protection. The aim is to link reductions in damage potential and heightened awareness of the residual danger of flooding, on the one hand, with the main aspects of flood prevention, structural flood protection, flood management and individual precautionary measures.

An increasing amount of the world’s population lives in megacities and conurbations: UrbanTec therewith takes up an intersectoral mega topic of future development
As a platform for industry and economy in the enormous market of megacities UrbanTec activates new visitor target groups at home and abroad.
