    Rapid Determination of Pesticides in Spinach

    Highly pigmented foods, such as spinach, require cleanup prior to analysis for pesticide residues. A dual-layer SPE tube containing graphitized carbon and aminopropyl on silica (NH2) is often used because; Carbon removes pigments and sterols and NH2 removes fatty acids, polar pigments, organic acids, and sugars. Removing these matrix materials reduces interferences that can lead to ion suppression in LC-MS, inlet contamination in GC-MS, and column contamination for both techniques. Our Supel Sphere Carbon/NH2 SPE tube uses spherical materials for both the carbon and NH2 layers, providing fast, more consistent flows compared to tubes containing granular material. This allows gravity elution (instead of vacuum elution) to be applied to Supel Sphere tubes, resulting in more contact time between extracts and sorbents.

    Reduced Fat Interference with Analysis of Pesticides in Avocados

    QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, Safe) is a very popular method for the extraction and cleanup of fruit and vegetable samples for pesticide residue analysis.2-4 The extraction step uses acetonitrile and a salting out effect (with MgSO4). Cleanup is then accomplished using dispersive SPE (dSPE) followed by a centrifuge step prior to analysis. This application shows the clean-up and analysis using Supel™ QuE Z-Sep+ QuEChERS and an SLB®-5ms GC column.

  • Enhanced anaerobic biodegradation for the soil and groundwater industry

    Enhanced anaerobic biodegradation is the practice of adding hydrogen (an electron donor) to groundwater and/or soil to increase the number and vitality of indigenous microorganisms performing anaerobic bioremediation (reductive dechlorination) on any anaerobically degradable compound or chlorinated contaminant. The most commonly targeted chlorinated groundwater contaminants are primarily used in industry as degreasing agents and include: Perchloroethylene (PCE), Trichloroethylene (TCE), Dichloroethylene (DCE), Vinyl Chloride (VC).

    Other anaerobically degradable compounds include: carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, certain pesticides/herbicides, perchlorate, nitrate, nitroaromatic explosives (TNT, RDX), dyes and chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s).

    In 2004-2005 LIFETECH`s laboratory worked out an advanced oxidation process (AOP) for removal of dioxins and furans (PCDD/F), chlorophenols and other contaminants from the BCD process wastewater. Consequently, our technology was installed and from April 2006 successfully used in the `Spolana-Dioxins` Project at SPOLANA a.s. in Neratovice, Czech Republic, as a part of Special Wastewater Treatment Plant. Our supply consisted of an ozone generator with the output of 5 kg O3/h at 10% w/w ozone concentration, two reaction tanks with mixing systems, a vent ozone destructor, and a control system. The world largest project for removal of PCDD/F was managed by BCD CZ a.s., a subsidiary of Thermal and Chemical Soil Remediation Ltd.
